Tried hitchhiking from more the city side and that was nice as well, the lady was very nice and took me to Kehtna manor where I wanted to do geocaching hehe.
We started walking slowly towards the bigger road, but hitched a ride despite not much traffic straight to the place were we left our bikes near Tartu.
Asked around in the line of cars waiting for the ferry. Most of them were driving towards Tallinn/Harjumaa, but then found a car driving to Tartu through Pärnu.
Caught a ride with a Ukrainian man on a Polish truck, who was driving from Jõhvi to Warsaw. It was very nice and warm in his truck after a long and wet hike in the bog. And he also gave me his wife’s homemade food. So a very nice drive back home!
I was dropped off here by a local, but had to wait here quite some while before someone picked me up. Spot itself isn’t bad, people can see you and your sign and have a place where to stop before and after the toll. I had a sign Split/Zagreb. Eventually an American couple stopped and they were driving to Ljubljana!!!
I have used this spot also two years ago, don’t remember how long we waited back then, but this time I didn’t wait long at all and got directly to Prizren.
I might’ve been lucky, but a long ass truck stopped for me there and I had my longest ride so far with one truck, though they did change drivers in Umeå (almost 900km from Piteå to Örebro).
During the night not so many cars/trucks, but still enough to catch a Ukrainian truck and sleep in his bed while he drove me to Krakow, where I wanted to stop. Others I asked were heading just to Wroclaw direction.
Got a ride with locals to Dyrøy ferjekai and they offered to pick me up after a hike on the island and that I could stay at their cottage for the night and continue hitchhiking to Trondheim tomorrow.
An older lady and her neighbour took me, at first they would’ve taken me to Orkanger, but then she invited me to stay the night at her guest room and then continue tomorrow, so that’s what I did instead.
Not too good of a bus stop, as they drive by quite fast, but a local took me, he was a big fan of the Baltics, showed me around in Kristiansund, and invited me back to stay with his family when I come back and took me to the ferjekai to Tustna.
Not a lot of traffic, mostly local, but got a ride to Florø with the first car who drove in the gas station. And the driver who took me, his friend was willing to host me for the night! Yay!
It seems to be a good spot for any direction but mostly people who stopped here were driving to Bergen. But I found a woman driving past Knarvik eventually.
A good spot in the sense that there’s lots of traffic and plenty of space where to stop. But, the traffic is moving rather fast and people were not very eager to stop there. A lady saw me and then drove back and came to pick me up.
A good spot overall, has space to stop and has a little cover from the rain under the cherry stall. I got a ride with a professional driver from Lapland all the way to Bergen. He even offered me a job as a driver, as they have one car without a driver at the moment haha.
Quite a bad spot, as not many people were willing to stop here. Finally a German campervan stopped for me and offered some fruits and a warm ride until Kinsarvik.
An amazing Danish pilot going to Copenhagen took us in his fancy ass Mercedes AMG. 😃 So even if it isn’t a perfect stopping place, if people wanted to they can. :)
We were asking around towards Kastrup or airport, as we wanted to go to Ørestad, most cars were either full or they just didn’t want to take hitchhikers. Eventually a man was going to pick up his wife in the airport and dropped us off in front of our couchsurfing host’s house.
I wasn’t particularly a fan of this place, as there’s a bike lane between the sidewalk and the road, but I stood there and I got a ride in minutes to Helsingør, so I guess it’s okay. :)
Me and my friend got a ride around the sunset straight to Hannover with a guy who was driving to Düsseldorf. So we drove the whole night until the sunrise, which was perfect. :)
Lots of local traffic, no one stopped at the bus stop for 30min. I tried asking around in the gas station and then a guy took me to the Kekava roundabout.
Not the best spot, as the cars are going fast here, but if you have a big sign, cars can see you from a distance. I had a sign saying EST and got a ride to Valga.
Spot itself is not bad, there’s two gas stations and room for people to stop. But at that moment I was there there weren’t many people heading very far. Luckily a guy offered to take me to the roundabout in Wexford and from there I can easily get a ride across to Waterford or further. He was kind enough to even buy me fruits and a sandwich for the road.
Not a very good gas station, but I was nearby so it was my best shot. But if possible I don’t recommend ending up here lol. Most of the people not heading far, or are cautious to take someone.
I was lucky to get a ride with a family-ran equestrian business owner and they took me to Gorey and then I couchsurfed with them.
Was lucky that the first people I saw, they were a lovely French family sailing the next morning to Isle of Man, so I couchsurfed on their boat for the night and then got a passage across.
There’s lots of space for cars to pull in and they can see you from the distance. Got a ride with a van with people who had passed me before but they had made a stop somewhere so after seeing me again they stopped and were on their way up to England, so I got to Aberystwyth where I wanted to get for the night.
Not a great spot at all, cars are going fast, but it is doable. A truck stopped and he was going all the way to Tallinn, for me it was enough to get to my grandma’s place near Häädemeeste!
Got near here with a bus from the city centre (it’s also possible to take it for free, if you dare). The first car I approached was an Estonian number plated car, but they were heading to Tartu, if I didn’t have a plan to visit my grandma first, I would’ve went with them, but I needed to go towards Ikla. So I fortunately found a woman driving to Ādaži.
Cars are going fast but there’s plenty of space to see you beforehand and space for cars and trucks to stop. This time I had a sign but the truck driver stopped and said he couldn’t read from that far, but he was going to Riga so that was nice!
I have a love-hate relationship with this bus stop. 😃 I have never waited longer than 30min here, but I hate how fast all the cars are going here haha. This time I had a sign saying LV/EST just to draw some more attention as it was very busy and getting a bit late. Before that I have never had a sign here. Got a ride as usual to the next exit from the road towards Riga.
Got quite lucky as the first person who stopped was heading straight to Warsaw. He was very lovely Latvian man and he even offered me both breakfast and lunch on our way to Poland.
Fast traffic but a local stopped and took me to Felanitx. He was very worried as Palma seems to Mallorcans to be very far so he wanted to pay for my bus, but I insisted that it’s okay, I’ll have a hike in the “lonely mountain” and see the caves in Felanitx and then head towards Palma afterwards.
Fast traffic, some space for cars to stop. Luckily I got a ride with a local man working in Finland heading back home to Kuressaare and he had no problem taking me all the way to Roomassaare sadam to catch a ferry across to Abruka. He even showed me around the city a bit with his car. I managed to arrive to the harbour two hours ahead of my time, but luckily the captain accepted my story of hitchhiking here and took me across with the earlier ferry.
A bus stop. Two girls were heading to Saaremaa!!! So I was very lucky and no one checked the passenger tickets, so I got a free ride across with the ferry!
Not too busy on a Sunday morning, but a nice bus stop and the first car took me across to the other side of Viljandi, after he had dropped his child off and then took me to Kõpu as he had time and wanted to help me a bit further.
More local traffic, but some people head from Rapla to Tartu, so I was counting on that (as I personally like to take this route with my car to Tartu). Walked from the centre of Rapla to here. A couple stopped and took me from here to all the way to Tartu with a quick stop in a graveyard in the middle of Estonia where they planned on stopping and I had no problem with that as I just wanted to be home by the evening.
You can easily get here from Tartu city centre with a bus (also for free as I do, if you dare). A lot of people drive in the evening from Tartu towards Mustvee or even Jõhvi, so I’ve hitched a ride from here to my friend’s place several times and had no problems getting a ride even straight to the place I wanted.
This is so far my best, fastest and coolest experience in Estonia! So an undercover/secret service agent who was on a mission to drive towards Ida-Viru, took me, even though he was in a hurry, as they had just captured some criminals that needed to be interrogated there. He had done hitchhiking himself when he was younger and that’s why he had stopped. So he told me that he’d get me to Tartu very fast and that he will speed and he cannot be fined (going waaaay over the speed limit lol) as it’s a work reason, though he was in a normal civilian car (we got to Tartu in less than 45 min instead of an hour). I won’t and can’t get into details but he told me lots about his previous work in the police, chasing criminals, those high-speed chases, loopholes in the law etc. He obviously wasn’t allowed to give me any information on his current job though I tried my best to feed my curiosity. I really felt like I was in an action movie, so I truly loved this experience in my home country with this lovely man working for the safety of our nation! 😎
A bus stop where a judo coach stopped and took me across to Viljandi and even took me a bit further to a bus stop so I’d have a good chance to get from there straight to Tartu.
Walked here from Leuven, asked around, two of them were going to Brussels and the third one happened to be a couple living near London, so I got a ride from here through Eurotunnel all the way to north of London. And they ended up being worried that I will get stuck hitchhiking out of the London bubble, so they bought be a crazy expensive train ticket to Manchester, so I got to my friend’s place by the evening! ☺️
Very busy gas station. Asked around and then an Indian family took me straight to the Netherlands. They were driving to Almere, but they dropped me off in Wageningen in front of my dorm.
All the truck drivers were either resting or having a break of 2-3 hours, so I had my lunch here, ended up having barbecue and vodka with the Ukrainian truck drivers and then after that found an Afghani couple heading to Frankfurt, who had never heard of hitchhiking but who were happy to take me.
The gas station wasn’t too busy and the only ones there were not driving far, so I started walking towards the highway and the next thing I know a woman stops to ask if I’m hitchhiking somewhere as she had done it herself too and then took me closer to the highway entrance.
It had already gotten dark, but luckily an Indian couple who were heading north and not a big detour through Amberg took me there. But it was a funny moment when they thought I might be doing something illegal and asked whether I have a valid visa and documents to be in this country. 😃
I messed it up with the previous ride lol so this one was the cool techno guy who didn’t mind taking a bit of a different highway so I could get here. But the previous ride was with a woman who has hitchhiked herself and took me to the next gas station as it was way better there. :)
Got a ride with a young guy from Memmingen who went to visit his friend somewhere and luckily he didn’t mind going through a different highway so I could be left at a better gas station on my way to Amberg. He blasted some great techno tracks in the car!!!
Most of the cars were heading towards Austria or Switzerland. But luckily a local German grandma with her two grandchildren took me to next rest area on the highway, meanwhile explaining to the kids that she also used to do that and explained what trampen means to them etc. :’)
It was already dark, but the hostel nearby was fully booked and I luckily got a couchsurfing host in Hohenems, so I hoped to get a ride from Feldkirch to there and luckily a guy stopped and took me to my host’s house.
I was walking up and hitching a ride with an A3 highway sign and a man stopped, took me to the nearest service station on the highway but before that he fed me a big ass Swiss meal. 🥰
Not a very good spot, as traffic is fast, most of them heading towards Zurich. I had a sign to Sihlbrugg, A man who stopped at the traffic light took me there even though he was heading to the other direction.
Walked here ~20min after getting dropped off near the exit from the highway and the first person I asked at the peage was a lovely Swiss mountain climber who took me straight to Lucerne.
I walked here and luckily the fence was cut open near the gate. But the police was near the peage, so they didn’t let me hitchhike from there, so I asked them to take me to the next gas station which the politely did. 😄
No luck today with hitchhiking in Portugal, waited for 3 hours on a Sunday morning until afternoon, which is so far my first that long of a wait ever, and then eventually took a train and then a bus to Faro, as I had a flight next morning from there.
