The driver from my previous hitchhike spotted a truck with Bulgarian license plates in front so he hailed the truck over here and asked where he was going. Turns out he was going to Sofia! Although he didn't speak English, he ended his truck journey and brought me the rest of the way to my accomodation by car! Thanks so much to both drivers! Super generous people.

I stood behind the guard rails with my thumb out just after where the merging traffic meets the main road. Travelling towards Bulgaria it is probably the best spot but cars go fast still and usually people here don't like picking up hitchhikers. Like all the other comments said though, you will eventually get a ride. I was lucky to have gotten a ride with someone in a fancy car going to the town near the border (and it was their first time picking up a hitchhiker too!) although they didn't speak English.

Barely any space and COMPLETELY DARK due to construction. I was supposed to get a ride with the previous truck driver from here but I was worried he already passed by here in the time it took for me to walk from the actual border crossing so I just hitchhiked here desperately and almost instantly got a ride with an Albanian living in Switzerland but coming to visit family in North Macedonia. He took me out of his way just south of the motorway in the direction of Skopje (he was going west on the motorway). Somehow a good spot? Probably going to change soon because ongoing construction.

Didn't matter because several minutes later a truck stopped who was going past Prizren (my destination). Horrible spot for going longer distances north. Try to use a thumb to go closer to the motorway if you get stuck here. Good spot where you get more traffic going out from Berat. There is an area in front where cars can pull into this smaller side road. Otherwise they can just stop in the right lane. I had a sign for Elbasan because I though that would be a cool shortcut to Tirana, but the first offer was going all the way to Vorë near Tirana so I decided to go all the way. He was a super cool person who overcame drug addiction and trafficking issues and is now working hard in society. He insisted on buying me food and gave me money for a bus ticket :) What a great person!

Good spot just sometimes cars can park here. It is also a bus stop so you may see a bus come by but otherwise there is decent space. It is good because you get traffic from the mountains too. I got a ride in half an hour with a British guy road tripping to Greece who had hitchhiked across America and many other places. I got picked up eventually by 2 Serbian guys heading to Orebic to escape the politics in Serbia who were super chill and friendly and willing to take me across the border. Probably better to stand in front of the sign because the people who picked me up originally thought I was police haha. There was also a massive 50 car convoy beeping and shouting and playing loud music waving some flags (including Croatian flag). I think it was a wedding convoy.

Decent spot with decent traffic. Lots of soace to pull over to the bus stop but sometimes people also use that as a turning lane in the opposite direction for some reason. I got jumpscared the first time it happened. With a sign HR I got an offer to Split in 30 mins and then one to near the Croatia border near Metkovic after 80 minutes. He was a bit horny though (even though I'm male).

I waited here 9 hours, met another hitchhiker and hitchhiked together for about 5 hours, saw some people I met in Mostar the day before, and even ended up sleeping the night a couple hundred metres from here. For the first 8 hours I used a sign and then I used just my thumb and got a ride to the next town an hour after that because I just needed to escape this place.

I think it would have been better for me to wait here a bit longer because I didn't quite understand him and eventually when he found out I was going to Chachak he hailed a bus on the highway off onto the side of the highway even though I told him I don't want to do that and he said I didn't have to pay but I ended up having to pay 1300 RSD for the bus. I must have been extremely lucky because with a sign for Verona, a woman originally from Russia but living in Italy stopped in less than 1 minute. This is not normal for Italy. I got here by crossing from the otherside of the roundabout but don't do what I did and try to go to the otherside a different way because it's really dangerous to cross the roundabout. 4 stars because the hitchhiking spot isn't the safest since traffic is very heavy (which is good too I guess).

Stood at the exit with a sign for Torino and waited quite some time. You can get here easily through the (staff only) turnstile on the east side of the service station. Italy is not good for hitchhiking so I expected this and even got offered a ride for 20 euros but declined. If going north towards Switzerland I would recommend not using a sign or use a sign for Albertville because Chamonix was definitely too far and small. Ended up getting a ride with a shepherd going to the alps to his farm near the Italian border.
