Tried taking the ferry first, but it only goes with 4 or more people, so we decided to hitchhike. We hitched while walking to the main road and got a ride straight to Salto.
Don't visit the park. It has a very lonely Jaguar in a too small enclosure. The hitching back to the city is easy though. We were 3 guys and got a ride in the back of a small pickup.
First the police past me by shouting something at me so when the next official looking vehicle stopped I expected to be told of, but it turned out to be a friendly park ranger. He just had to stop at every parking space to check on stuff.
Sign "Teide".
First I stood closer to the gates where there's more space to pull over, but the Gendarmery told me to go in front of the highway sign (I guess, I don't speak French). It was still fine. Drivers will probably still stop right after the highway sign..
Used sign "Nantes".
Because there is only a onramp no oframp I tried hitching to the next one. Road seemed a bit dodgy to walk. Gave up after 16 minutes and took the long hike to the onramp with the three roundabouts. Try to get dropped of there in the first place, because it's not an easy route.
I didn't enjoy hitching there, but you can't argue the results. I stood after the pedestrian crossing to stand out from the crowd, but I gues you could go before and ask the drivers waiting on the red light. I had sign "A10".
Stand a bit further, where the on and oframp split. There's a side rod there where drivers can pull in. Had a few offers for direction Brussels but I waited for a ride towards Lille and got it after 38 minutes.
I didn't like the spot. The parking bay is quite small and traffic fast. No doubt a "mad man driver" wouldn't care, but sometimes you just want normal drivers. So I took the busses to the border gas station
After 43mins decided to walk to the next onramp which has better space for drivers to stop. Ofcourse, a "mad man driver" would have no issue stopping here.
Because the road going west from Grubisno Polje was closed we tried going around to Veliki Grdevac and Daruvar. In hinsight we should have walked the closed road to the junction because we got stuck in the middle of nowhere.
A quiet gas station. We just sat in front of the shop with a sign. Within 10 minutes we had 2 offers and they discussed who had the best ride for us. In the end the guy that took us dropped us exactly where we needed to go.
It took us 4 hours to get out of this town. We were just looking for somewhere to fill our waterbottles at the graveyard when we got our ride to Salgotarjan.
Doesn't seem to have a lot of traffic going out of the city. Our driver had to go in Zvolen but dropped us all the way in Divin, 40km away.
Might make more sense to find a placce a bit more on the outskirts of the city.
Had one driver promise me he'd come back to bring me to Enschede in 10 mins, but I already had a ride before that.
At the bus stop. Bit awkward with the curve of the road being blocked from view by traffic signs so I stood quite far on the road.
I wanted to go north-west on the A3, so I should have stopped 1 gas station earlier. Than decided to take a ride to FF airport, but in hindsight I think I should have tried to get to Weiskirchen and cross there...
Wanted to go to Germany and than north. After 50 mins the first car to stop took me back to Basel close to the A5. Not the shortest route but better than staying here.
As an exit dweller I don't like this place. There is to much going on with weird driving routes around the place. But you can't argue results. I was gone to Basel in 23mins, so I must rate 5 stars.
Got here at around 21:39. Tried HH'ing for 30 minutes than decided to wildcamp. Pretty good spot in a field and out of sight (50.09609, 8.34800). Next morning waited 29mins for a ride.
With sign "A3 süd". Only got some offers to Düsseldorf. Moved to the onramp after 69mins, but had the same result there. If you get stuck here your best option is public transport to the next Raststätte.
Hünxe. Sometimes you get a ride to Ohligers Heide in 30 minutes, sometimes you wait 3 hours before accepting a ride into the HH'ers hell that is Ruhrpot. Today was the latter. Don't be like me. It's (at least) Ohligers Heide or nothing.
Keep pushing the pedestrian crossing button to force drivers to stop. They can turn into the carpool parking.
Used sign "Zutphen". Got dropped at the station with 5 minutes before my train left.
I didn't wait for the perfect ride, just took one that went east.
It's not a BP station anymore so things people wrote before me might not apply anymore.
Tried the entry to the gas station first but people turning left on the N11 are already sorted to the left lane so it's harder for them to pull in. So I moved to the middle berm just before the traffic lights with sign "A12". Told my driver he could drop me at the gas station on the N11 near Bodegraven, but he insisted on taking me to the next one on the A12.
There's a bus stop on the onramp. I being a sunday meant not to much traffic so my driver could make a late decision and reverse back onto the bus lane. On week days this place might be a bit harder to get out of. I would still try though.
Bus stop in front of the gas station. Sheltered from the rain under the roof of the station while hitching the passing traffic. Used sign "Enschede". Waited 3 mins for a driver that took a detour to drop me a the station.
I walked here from the A35 oframp because I had no confidence of finding a ride going east there. It paid of after 18minutes. Could use a sign "Lonnekemeer" for the next gas station.
Parking bay on the N18. May feel dodgy but people see you from a good distance. Be aware that after Haaksbergen there or no more good hitchhiking places on the N18 so it might make sense to wait a bit longer to find the perfect ride for you direction.
Expected more from this place. Maybey I should have used a sign. Stood in the berm before the gas station to give people time to react. Declined 4 rides going only to Groenlo before taking one there anyway. There I only waited 2minutes so should have doen that right away.
Stood in from of some houses. Pretty bad. Best you can hope for is a driver that understands they have to go on the parallel road at the next turn and go bad to you. Or like my driver, see you when they go the wrong way, and remember you when they drive the other way.
From the Mittfahrbank at Edeka. Tramprennen Easter Race. Just needed to get a ride anywhere, so we hitched a ride in a trailer to the other side of the road.
For serious hitchhiking I would prefer to find a better place a bit up the road.
Not much traffic on a saturday, but only waited 3 minutes. Lady took a detour to drop me where I needed to go.
Stand just in front of the bus stop so people can pull into the side street. Alternativly, try the crossing Grevengoedlaan x Haareweg for probably some more traffic.
If you get dropped of on the parking on either side and want to go into Enschede: Walk along the highway, under the viaduct, than climb it on the other side.
Tried here instead of at the onramp, trying to get to Nijmegen. Eventualy accepted a ride to the train station, only for them to drop of of 30min away from the station....
Found out the gas station isn't reachable on foot so went to this bus stop instead. Got offered rides to "Duiven" and "Arnhem zuid" before accepting a ride to gas station "Kempke" on the A325.
I was at the bus stop first but people only have a short time to pull over because they're coming around the corner.
At the Tipsy you're more vissable, and people can turn into the parking lot.
Hiked here from the raststätte because there was a polish hitchhiking race with >8 people there.
Climbing the mount from the North-west (like i did) isn't advisable but I'm not sure how else you would reach this place.
Went here because my drivers car broke down just 100 meters away on the autobahn. Looked safe to me but I didn't like the vibe so I hiked to the raststätte. Nice 30 minutes walk through some fields.
Just outside the terminal, next to the parking lot. The cars were still disembarking when I walked out. They come one by one, well spaced apart. Plenty of space for them to stop aswell.
Probable even better to ask people onboard the night before, if that's your style.
After more than 3 hours I accepted the first ride that took me somewhere between Lakselv and Karasjok. Don't be like me! Only accept rides to at least Karasjok. There is nothing in between.
After 2 more hours in the middle of nowhere I hitched a ride back north, and took the route Alta->Kautokeino->Finland
Disclaimer: it was a sunday, so you might be more lucky on a weekday.
I first tried at the intersection E4/E95, then walked to this spot. A disused busstop.
After Skelleftea any spot is probably as good as any other. There wont be much traffic anywhere, and anyone will be able to stop anywhere, but most people wont...
I made it to Bodö in 1 day.
Towards Finland.
Speed limit is 110 but you are visable from a good distance. There's a bus stop, so place to stop for drivers and shelter for you. More traffic than the onramp near the town
Towards Finland.
In theory it should be a good spot. In practice there was hardly any traffic. After 1,5 hours I walked to the next onramp (15min walk) and got a ride in 15 mins.
The E4 entry is definitely better, but the police sent me away.
Got a ride from a driver that happened to see my sign ("NORR") from the opposite side. Being between 2 roundabouts he was easily able to turn around.
I rate it 5 stars, but the police that sent me away probably give it 0.
Definitely not unsafe as they suggested. But I obeyed and moved to the bus stop at the gas station. Crossing the roundabout was probably more dangerous than staying at the exit though...
So just make the most of it until the police come.
To the north.
In my (limited) experience bus stops near highways are better than gas station in Sweden.
Spent 45 minutes here before I went to the bus stop around the corner. There also no luck (1h) so I took the bus to Nordhem and got a ride in 5min.
Going north. Early in the morning. Paid the ticket, asked people in the lounche. Got 1 reluctant offer for if I wouldn't find anyone else. Than found a couple that happily took me all the way to Kopenhagen.
Late afternoon. Lots of people that take the ferry early next morning and are going to spent the night in Lübeck. Eventually got a ride to Fehmarn. Paid the ticket (20euro) and successfully hitch a ride to Kopenhagen on the ferry.
Getting here from Vliegveldstraat (N737): leave the viaduct on the SE side, down to the highway, and under the bridge. The grass is quite wide so it should be safe.
Camping store Obelink.
There is no place to stand on the side going to Aalten/Doetinchem but I still had a ride in 3 min by standing on the paralel road with a sign.
If the store is open it should be quite easy getting a ride to Doetinchem, or Germany by asking at the parking.
Great for going to Toulouse, but I wanted to go to Andorra. Eventually took a ride to the Peage just before Toulouse, crossed all 30 lanes and got a ride to Andorra in no time.
Tried both at the gates and asking at the parking, but no luck. After going to the shop (Lidl), I tried before the gates from the city and had a ride in 15min.
The first people to enter the highway (after about 15min) gave me my ride, offered me a place to stay, and a job.
So like the person before me said, not a lot of trafic , but people are friendly here.
Police send me away from this spot so I went back to the roundabout, as there was more trafic coming from the city than from the "Aire".
People aren't driving to fast and there is space, so just stand here untill the police send you away.
I use this spot a lot with mixed results. If it's to busy people don't stop because the entry isn't very wide. In this case don't be to picky and take the first ride you get to Isselburg (10km further). This entry is much wider, but with less trafic.
