I waited for almost three hours, met a French hitchhiker, and together we got a ride in a French camper to Copenhagen.
This gas station has an outdoor water tap, which is very convenient on hot summer days.
I remember my sister's bad experience at this parking area before—she and her husband had to wait for a ride for more than 24 hours. I was lucky that day and got a ride to Gothenburg in just 15 minutes. The car was originally going to Oslo, but they offered me a lift to Gothenburg. All the other cars were full.
Gas station and rest area – a perfect spot for both northbound and southbound directions! Many cars heading to Oslo and Gothenburg, and one was even going all the way back to Serbia. Ask people at the gas station and in the charging area. I got a ride to Oslo.
Sorry guys, but this might be my lucky spot! Within 10 minutes I got a short ride to the next gas station/rest area. The driver mentioned it’s not a safe spot since the ramp is already part of the motorway — but in my opinion, it’s still a usable place for hitchhiking north.
Spent almost three hours asking people for a ride with my 'Hamburg' sign. Eventually I got tired and moved to the exit of the station area — within 20 minutes, I caught a ride to Rødby.
Technically a good spot with space to pull over. I was heading south and got stuck there at night, so I pitched my tent in a nearby neighbourhood. The next morning, I easily got a ride to Copenhagen — there’s a lot of traffic heading that way. It took me 5 minutes to get a ride on the morning.
The bus stop has plenty of space to pull over. You might consider using a sign. There’s a lot of traffic. I only got a very short ride, just enough to get out of Oslo.
Avoid hitchhiking near the checkpoint. Another guy and I were kicked out, and they even called the police. Even though we were standing at the end of the motorway—which technically wasn’t a motorway—they forced us to buy ferry tickets.
Don’t accept a ride to Rødby unless the car is actually going to Germany.
I recently sent a complaint to Scandlines, but it didn’t help. From now on, I’ll either avoid their ferries or hitchhike more strategically.
Screw Scandlines and their policies!
A small local gas station, but a good spot if you’re heading to Kaiserslautern—there’s plenty of local traffic. Hopefully, this spot works well for trips toward Trier, Saarbrücken, or even France too.
A perfect spot or gas station if you’re heading to southwest Germany. Don’t hesitate to ask drivers—I managed to get a ride all the way to a place nearby Kaiserslautern.
This is a great spot for hitchhiking! My original plan was to hitchhike to Kaiserslautern via Nuremberg. After just five minutes, a car stopped, but I turned it down since it was only a very short-distance ride. Twenty minutes later, I got lucky with an 80 km ride to Augsburg, which I gladly accepted and decided to adjust my route for the day.
This spot is also excellent for night hitchhiking from Munich.
Technically not a bad spot, but it is more convenient to walk to Ler and get a ride there. After 25 minutes a got a ride, the car was going to the national park, but I decided to get off at Lundamo, which was more convenient for me.
This spot is not convenient at all (going south). Walk 15 minutes to a bus stop and try to get a ride there. Or walk 40 minutes to Ler, which is a good spot.
I got stuck there on a cold and rainy night. A car going to Hamar stopped, but it was not on my way. After an hour came a police car, we had a nice chat and they recommended me to wait and get warm in McDonalds, which is 24/7 open. The police was worried about me staying next to a 80-90km/h lane, which is next to the roundabout. Technically this spot is good, but the combination of darkness (there are lights there) and a Norwegian rain was not perfect in their opinion. But McDonalds was a good choice.
Traffic going to Hamar, Rena, Oslo. IN case you got stuck on night or rainy weather, wait in McDonalds, which is 24/7 open. The staff there is nice, be nice to them too :) I spent a rainy cold night there till 6am and got a ride to Oslo in 45 minutes. Before it cars to Hamar and Rena stopped.
Technically OK, but 3 hours wait (from 1:30pm till 15.30 pm) on Saturday is a shit! Finally got a ride to Kvål, which is not a perfect spot at all. As soon as I got to my favorite spot LUNDAMO, I got a long ride after 10 minutes wait.
Klet, sorry never ever! Please read my review about Lundamo and start your trip from there!
I appeared at this spot accidentally because my previous driver accidentally made a mistake and took other way to Leverkusen than he planned before. Anyway, this spot was not convenient in my case because I was trying to get back to A1. Anyway, I didn't have any other option when I got there. After approx. 1 hour a kind soul helped me, drove some extra kilometers and took me to the gas station at Burscheid on A1.
I think there is much local traffic there, going to Dusseldorf, Duisburg and Leverkusen.
I was camping there. Many cars are heading to Copenhagen. Much traffic to Sweden and Norway too, but many of the cars are full. After 3 hours got a ride to Kastrup. It was maybe not my lucky day that day.
Much traffic going north (Sweden, Denmark, Norway). I was going back to Norway, asked a Norwegian driver, but his car was full. Then after 10 minutes a girl with a small dog came to me and asked me "Hi, What is your story?". Hehe then she asked me if I had a driving licence and if I drank alcohol that day. So she was going to Gøteborg and then to Stockholm. She asked me if I would like to join her and help her driving to Copenhagen. So I became her driver that day and did it to Copenhagen.
At that gas station you should even use "Oslo" sign :))) it is what I exactly did - I had 3 signs, i.e. Bremen, Hamburg, Oslo.
Easily got a ride to Kaiserslautern. I used "Kaiserslautern" sign. But a woman who stopped was going to Nancy/France. She didn't have GPS working that day, so she asked me to help her and she was going the same way.
Many cars stop at this rastplatz.
I don't know WHY I spent 4 hrs there!? Then I came to the gas station itself and got an extremely fast ride almost to Frankfur am Main.
That day I learned the same thing again - always stay at the entrance of the gas station (in Germany!) and talk to people, sile and ask where they go :)
Totally agree with Ireneo!
Got a ride there after 40 mins wait. Rather bad place for cars to stop BUT POSSIBLE. I was going towards Nurnberg, got a ride to Chemnitz.
I spen like 30-40 minutes there at around 11pm, and it was wet outside. Only 3-4 cars stopped at the gas station. I saw a Polish truck with curtains drawn, parked there. Then suddenly a driver appeared there. I talked to him in my poorly Polish and it worked, he was going to Wroclaw, and it was on my way to Cottbus! Such a luck!
0 minutes wait! A car was going somewhere on my way to Berlin. They saw my sign and asked me if I would join them :)
Anyway, the gas station on the autobahn is always perfect.
Totally agree with Chris about that bus stops near highways are better than gas station in Sweden.
This gas station worked well for me, got a ride north to Halmstad. I was hitchhiking at the entrance of the gas station.
This gas station was perfect during the heavy rain. 40 mins only with a sign "Hamburg" and got a ride. The car was going far in Denmark but I got off at the gas station in Karlslunde.
I spent a night there, a good camping place right in front of the gas station. Many trucks take rest there, you should talk to truck drivers. It was not much traffic on early morning, but after a couple of hours I got a ride to Copenhagen.
got a 45 mins walk and found this spot looking at my MapsMe map. During 20 minutes 2 cars stopped - the 1st one was going to Linkoping, the next one to Angelholm, my direction south.
The spot is alright, possible to stay there, enough space to pull over, but some cars are going fast, but still alright in my opinion.
Technically a good spot, but I spent much time and didn't get luck that evening. Then I got a ride to Gøteborg, to a much worse spot and had to take a 45 minutes walk and find a kind of good spot (which was a lucky one!).
A perfect place BUT not much traffic even I got a short ride with the local kids to Kungalv.
At this spot there is a good place for camping if you got stuck on the night.
This spot is perfect if you go north despite I spent around 3 hours there (because of Sunday evening). There is a small gas station, and electrical charges there, a place for camping too. I was hitch hiking right after the roundabout during the darkness ang got a ride. The car was going to Ski, I got off in Sarpsborg.
Much space to pull over, the cars going not too fast, got a short ride 5 km to the next gas station.
If you got a ride to Uddevalla/Torp/shopping mall, choose this ramp. There is one more ramp 900 meters to north, but that ramp is not convenient on evenings because of much much less traffic.
But this spot is perfect if you're heading north.
Not much space to pull over, but alright. There is much traffic there due to the shopping mall and the gas station. Less traffic on late evenings and holidays. Got a short ride on my way south (not the 1st time at this spot).
I spent almost 4,5 hours between this gas station and the ramp. Surprisingly I didn't get luck. There were even cars going to Copenhagen, but totally full, there is much local traffic there too. Then I came to the bus stop on the motorway and got a ride after 20 mins.
At the bus stop on the highway, but the cars are allowed to stop there. After spending around 4,5 hours on the ramp and the gas station nearby (fuck!) I easily got a 20 km ride to Ås.
The traffic at the highway is intensive, and the chance to be picked up is also high :)
Ha ha ha, what should I say, guys? Last time I wrote that this spot is not convenient, and the next time after 20 mins wait (around 7.45 pm) a car from the main road pulled over. The car was going to Trondheim, my final destination.
Maybe I was lucky that day. But as an experienced hitch-hiker I would technically avoid this spot. I suggest Elverum roundabout which is more convenient and all the traffic is the same.
Perfect spot, close to gas station, a perfect place for camping, bus stop - much space to pull over. May cars go to Elverum and Trysil, maybe to Trondheim road.
A good spot if heading to Trondheim, BUT do not go closer than Elverum roundabout because there are not convenient spots before Elverum except Ånestadkrysset which is 8km before Elverum roundabout (turn to Trondheim road)
Not a perfect spot because the road goes downhill, trucks can't stop there, but good enough - there is enough space to pull out for a regular car. 43 mins wait and a 280km ride to Dal close to the Oslo airport. Nothing to complain.
There are many gaz stations and supermarkets there.
Even I got a ride after 5 mins, the spot in Rena is not really convenient. People going from the gas station and supermarked can see you, but it's not convenient for the cars going on the main road to pull over because of speed limit 70-80km/h and not enough space to pull out.
A perfect spot if you're heading up to Trondheim. Many cars going from Oslo to Trondheim prefer this road. The spot is good - enough space to pull out, right after roundabout, the drivers see you well.
A perfect stop if you head up to Trondheim or Elverum, enough space to pull out, just after the roundabout - drivers clearly see you. There is a gaz station and a super market there.
Afternoon, waiting time 80 mins, a 109km ride to Hamar, but I jumped off at a gaz station 20 km before Hamar, which is the best decision when you head up to Trondheim.
As I always say about this Shell Gaz station - be patient and friendly filter out short local rides if you go far north.
The perfect, safest and convenient spot in Dombås (heading north). There is no convenient place after the roundabout in Dombås center. Take a 10 minutes walk to this convenient spot (enoug space to stop for a car) where I got a ride to Trondheim after 15 mins.
I love this Gas station, many cars stop there. I used a sign and my thumb. You should filter out short distance rides, just be patient and wait for a longer ride.
Heading to Trondheim, waiting time 30 mins, a 266 km ride to Otta.
2nd day of Easter (April 2024), a 70 minutes wait and a 422km ride to Kløfta (close to Oslo).
To get there take a local train to Lundamo stasjon, this is the last station to which you use a single ticket (46 NOK) valid in transportation zone A. At that point you are well visible and right by the E6 motorway, cars go 50 km/h and there is a large shoulder for drivers to pull over. I used a sign and my thumb.
This spot is perfect because all the town and very local Trondheim-traffic is already filtered out.
A spot is right after the roundabout, enough space for a regular car, the local traffic goes to Trondheim. This is a riksveg (not a real highway), so it's not a problem to hitchhike at this spot.
Going South, a bus stop opposite Kilpishalli/KMarket - enough space to stop, the cars go slowly. You might need time to get your ride, but be patient. (July 2023).
Was waiting for 25 min, then got a short ride and then a car going 470km to Mo i Rana. The local traffic is actually filtered out, and there is enough space to stop, and you are very visible.
