For some reason I walked in here (2017) in night from the gas station few km in direction to the Chambery. Maybe because it was night and not much traffic so expecting to have more directly on pay tools. (There is a bridge above train track from the gas, in bad condition atm, after that is a field, back then with horses (possibly a private property). Rest is the normal road. After arriving near the entry to this pay tools, realized there is a fence all over the place. The under passage was closed by gate and with some cameras. So had to climb over the fence somehow, hard to do with a heavy backpack, but got in. Fence was bend a bit, so not the first one possibly to do it.) Slept there till the morning on parking lot and got lift to Grenoble.

In the middle of the trip, he found out he had forgotten his medicine, so he went back home to pick it up. On way back he took us by old route as it's nicer to pass by (and not boring to ride the machine thru more wildly shaped road) and the sun was going down, making the scenery. He like to listen to Janis Joplin - what a ride - unforgettable!

Walked the border crossing and waited on the other side (2016, 1f + 1m). Plenty of annoying taxi drivers, some of them being rude. So moved ourselves further away and after being offered few short rides not to Skopje, we got a lift almost to the city. By a sound system traveling for some party outside of Skopje. The road around Skopje was destroyed by flash flood just a few days a go - military vehicles could be seen plowing the way out of mud.

Not the best spot, not much traffic - as there are three roads that siphon cars out of the city for highway before this place. There is a 200 long line with some old bridge-like structure above, perhaps for future bus stop, with crosswalk in middle, safe place to stop for the driver. Got direct lift to the center of Budapest.

Got dropped here 2016 on way back to Sofia. Nice spot with a lot of space to stop, at the day almost no traffic so even easier. No direct shade. Nowadays they added one more line to highway and cut the bushes/trees around so even less shade possible. Few police motorbikes passed by, they took, all of them, the right turn. They noticed me, started standing up on their bikes while looking at me, but since they were driving too fast, they were unable to pull over - so I wasn't checked. Got picked up by truck driver quite fast, but he wasn't going much further on highway, only nearest city exit.

Arrived late at night, it was rainy a lot the next day. Nowadays the tool gate is not there but during my stay (2016) I was pushed out several times by police from the tools back to the gas station. They were there in big numbers, also entire police bus arrived. As they pushed me far away from tools the cars were driving fast and cannot stop for me. I had route defined so cannot use few rides offered for GR, I needed the Sofia. The construction work on highway on the route also didn't helped a lot. Eventually gave up and walked to the Nis for a bus. Just bad weather, police and time pressure. Otherwise used to be a god spot near the tools. The gas station is nice. Definitely no a bad spot. Camped near the hotel on the other side of highway on the slope. A lot of feral dogs hung around the gas station back then. Some followed me constantly, even through the underpass under the highway, to the other side. Or to the tools and back. Also noticed snakes were sunbathing here and jumping down the slope as I walked back and forth. Interesting spot overall.

Unfortunately overslept and missed departure of my truck from previous day so had to start again. It's a big place so could build a tent easily (beside the truck parking lot). Police didn't bother, even in 2016, there was refugee camp on the other side of border so definitely not the best time to be around as HH. (HWM don't allow logging past rides before 2020, that is the reason why date of entry doesn't check.) First truck that picked me up ended with thorough border control so I went on foot across the border. Shortest hitch ever. Have no problem with police at all passing by through the border.

I don't remember precisely how I got there (they reconstructed the area since - 2016 is the time of my past ride). Definitely not a great spot from perspective of location. Perhaps try the exit roundabout from the area below as HH from here is on the highway directly, so it's not legal option. Fortunately in the morning there was no heavy traffic and driver could stop for me. Behind Ikea there is playground, I slept there as it offers a tube and it was rainy so it covered me trough the night. If you have time, take train/bus to Breclav > Ladna village and walk to the gas station there directly on highway, as it's only walkable place to HH on this road below Brno on way to Bratislava (not Wien). (For Wien one must choose different exit from Brno, it's easier route.) Or continue by train to Mikulov. Leaving big city is always hard.

A legendary spot, only one from Bratislava to HU or AT imo. I had a route defined so didn't take few offers and finally after a long wait got direct to Szeged. The driver must sleep there but offer me a ride next day further to Serbia. Plenty of traffic to Wien, Gratz, Gyor, Budapest also. There is no shade. Walkable in 45 min. from Petrzalka/Juzne mesto bus stop > across the train tracks, bridge above highway and 500m through the field, it may be muddy if it's rainy day.

Not a bad place. Direct ride to Brno. This was before the highway construction. So nowadays you ma catch a ride not to Vysoke Myto by the old road, but from roundabout heading to the highway. Therefore position yourself accordingly by the traffic to the right exit based on how the driver will show you reactions on the sign. May it be full of local traffic now on this bypass. (In Vysoke Myto there is also connection to the highway.)

This used to be good spot getting out of Hradec, still working tho. But nowadays I would choose spot going to highway for longer trip (Brno, Olomouc direction) from before the Shell gas station on Rasinova trida. This is more local now; used this spot multiple times for directions: Sumpek, Zabreh, Ceska Trebova or Usti n Orlici. Easily accessible by 1,2 bus lines, stop Na Plachte. There is a bus stop so drivers have enough place to stop safely. Cars are slow, road still in city area and the traffic lights cutting the flow. HH can move behind the traffic lights to the spot where cars stopping completely if this place doesn't work.
