After that I explain, I did hitchhiking, they weren't happy but they said okey. The traffic is really fast and there are two exits in the gas station with not a lot of cars. We were really lucky on this hitchhiking trip. It’s unusual for people to travel far from the city and make a lot of short trips. We met some geologists who had come all the way from Cayenne specifically for a study, and they kindly gave us a ride back with them.

Everyone was asking us where we were going and if everything was okay. People were genuinely concerned but wary. That’s normal because on this stretch of the road in French Guiana, it’s common to have your vehicle pulled over by people who ask you to stop. Please note that the federal police office where you get your exit stamp is located in the city, not at the bridge. I don’t know where it is on the French side (since I’m French, I didn’t need to go there).

Getting to Oiapoque isn't easy. Very few people take this route. People use what are called “piratas” there (a concept very similar to “collectivos”) or buses. The only way we found to get there was to negotiate with a pirata for a free ride until he found people willing to pay to go there. One of the worst trips I've ever taken. We got there, and everyone told us it was impossible to cross the mountains on that road. Nobody goes that way; you have to take the other road to the south. We waited there all day and ended up taking a bus back to Cuenca.
