A better hitchhiking spot probably doesn’t exist. It’s the entrance to the road that connects north to south Sweden. Tourists, locals, workers, really anyone going to Sweden has to take this E4 road. Stick your thumb out, or make sign if you really want to be specific, because this will help you get far into Sweden, wherever it may be. It might even be better if you take this road if you are planning to go to Kiruna or/and Norway, since the road from Töre has more traffic then the ones in Finland and the Swedish road next to the Torneå river. ==> highly recommend!
I went to this spot on a Sunday morning, so traffic was low but still flowing constantly. So this spot might be too busy on weekdays. However, drivers have space to stop and you are sure that almost all drivers will drive north from here.
From the gas station here you will have an easy time getting to the Kazach border. Some people might stop 6 km before the border crossing, but overall you should be able to make it within an hour from here.
Just get further from this spot as soon as possible, because there are many taxis driving here, drive to the next village taldy suu and from there it is a piece of cake hitchhiking! Goodluck to Kazachstan!
Listen to the advice from other hitchhikers taking the eastern road from karakol, this road to Kazachstan is a lot easier to hitchhike! Take this route if you want to make it to Kazachstan as quickly as possible!
People are more likely to ask for money here, but keep standing, more drivers will pull up! Don’t let the pessimism of other taxi drivers pull you down!
Border guards will not allow you to cross by truck, they will either put you in a military truck or you will be put on a bus heading in the same direction. Crossing the border at the arc, is done by walking, and at the Kyrgyz side you can get another truck or talk to your previous truck driver to wait for you if possible (what we did).
Only plausible place where you will get a ride is at the police checkpoint near the customs area where they check your passport or 20 km down the road at the next police checkpoint. Talk to the police officers and explain your situation, truckers are convinced that they are not allowed to take hitchhikers, but that is not the case when the police explains to them there are not going to be any problems down the road. Take a truck from here (preferably Kyrgyz) and go to the second to last border check.
Traffic flow is very low, but if someone goes here he will probably take you. Also got the ride after sun down, so don’t let the time discourage you! It is a very difficult spot you will manage!
A doctor in an old ambulance picked us up from here. Good spot after the point where the road comes together, enough place for cars to stop. And traffic flow towards Khorog is quite high.
Trafic flow is low, but atleast every truck driving here goes to Murgab or to the Chinese border. In our case a truck driver drove to the Chinese border! But since the pamir highway and the road is so shit, be prepared to drive for 14 hours to the China border! At one point our truck driver got tired and we had to drive the truck ourselves for over 6 hours. Good spot, got here by shared taxi which was 50 somoni from Khorog.
This spot really comes down to luck, me and another traveller managed to get a ride from a German couple that drove a camper van, but traffic to Dervoz is very sporadic and on our way to Dervoz, we barely met anyone. So I would recommend the south route from Dushanbe more. But if you want to test you luck, go ahead!
Cops are really nice and gave us free watermelon and plov.
Stood there with a fellow traveller right besides the gas station, really good hitchhiking spot! The car took us to Gori, the exact place we needed to be. Highly recommend!
I spent the night here in a tent near the ДПС post. They gave me sausages, bread and warm water to cook. The next day I got a ride straight to Chita at 5 o clock in the morning. It was the longest continuous ride I have ever gotten. 1600 km.
