I got extremely lucky here. I got out of a car, and the driver of the car parked next to me noticed me with my “Lyon” sign and immediately told me I could ride with him (and his two beautiful dogs).

Bus station just after the roundabout, with plenty of space for cars to pull over. Personally, I think I made the mistake of putting up my “Lyon” sign too early. When I tried without a sign, a car heading to Montpellier stopped for me within 10 minutes.

On paper, this is a great spot, with an enormous amount of traffic. For some reason, though, I didn’t have much luck here. This may have been because I was trying to get to Avignon, which probably wasn’t a very common destination from here. In the end, I changed my sign to “n'importe où” (anywhere), and within 5 minutes I got a ride to a nearby seaside town.

Quite a good spot, a really large rest area with plenty of traffic heading along the coast (Montpellier, Marseille, etc.).

This is one of those places where the saying “if someone wants to stop, they will stop” really applies. It’s not ideal, but it’s far from the worst either. Drivers can see you from a relatively long distance, and there’s a fair amount of space for them to pull over.
