For overnight stays there is l a gate at the south end of the gas station you can access the forest without jumping a fence. I stood at the island at the very edge of the service station before the motorway so all the cars could see you. Had a sign to interlaken but went to andermatt with the driver because he was a good yarn.

Lots of cars/ trucks commuting between coasts, got a ride to the start of a hike near Otira. This is probably the busiest hitching spot in the country the weekend before coast2coast as everyone is training, if your feeling generous I had some fun as a free shuttle driver last year.

Good spot on paper but have served my time at this spot over 3 or so times (usually 40 mins to an hour) There is not much traffic but there is free wifi at the wrinkly ram for whenever you take a break for a beer. Also the only spot I’ve arrived at when other hitchhikers are already waiting!

Timing is not everything, but it was a whole damn lot here, don’t stand here at 7am, go back to sleep. I watched the DOC worker drive to the office then head out to the field an hour later. Saw another dude moving boats up and down the road multiple times, felt more like a landmark than a hitchhiker. (Sign to wanaka)

Have stood here twice and got a ride twice within 20 mins or so. Lots of stopping space too. No shade in the rain but there is a point just before your a drenched rat that people feel bad for you and aren’t overly worried about you saturating the inside of their car.

Surprisingly good spot headed towards Lichtenstein, got a ride through to Austria. Cars from every direction can see you for a while and there is lots of stopping space. Most people driving slow enough to stop too. Driver picked us up because our sign was his destination (Feldkirch)

good spot to hitch from. We were there from 8:30am on a Thursday, waited maybe an hour. Dude + chick stood on either road at the end of gas station with signs to Zagreb. Got insanely lucky, ended up in a ride to central Serbia 750km away. Lived with him for 5 days and he showed us around his home village!

Hitched here multiple times. Good spot on paper. Stand anywhere before the spend sign, there are pullover bays everywhere in tinwald. Sometimes you get lucky with truckies or old ladies. Sometimes you just get ashburtoned.

Huge pullover parking bays for both directions all throughout town, often they are empty in the mornings and for much of the day. You’d be hard done by to not get a spot or a ride out of this place. Cafe also does mean pies too.

Hitched here 10+ times, great spot to get anywhere south from Christchurch. Note that especially on weekdays people aren’t going much further than Ashburton. If you do get picked up by someone doing short distance, rakaia is amazing to hitch out of, as well as the end of ashburton (tinwald), which is significantly better for continuing south than the middle of town in my experience.

Didn’t get a ride here but there would be enough space for a car to stop. The building on the other side of the road also gives shade until like 10am (July) which is the main plus here. Often cars stopped in stupid places so other cars would slow down to get around which meant they saw us more.

Maybe it was a ok spot. We were dissociating and delusional from the heat. The gas station worker kept coming up to us say we were crazy, locals told us to get a bus. Dunked my hat in the fountain nearby to cool off, it was hot but wet at least. Take what you will from this.

If your a climber clearly display your rope/ shoes for a better chance for other climbers to pick you up up. Ended up having to ask the least snobby people I could find.
