we got picked up fairly fast by someone going to Paris. They dropped us on the outskirts, where we got a bus and a train into the centre.

can be rough to get to Orléans, Paris is like a magnet,
France is especially crossed on the north-south axis..

I tried different spot and the best is this one because you can catch all cars and there are driving slowly. I reach this point at 2:30pm a thursday : it was a low traffic time.

Toll booth: personnaly I went there from Auxerre (which is quite easy if you're patient and not afraid to walk) by following the road signs "Paris" and "A6".
Sometimes I had to wait for the traffic to thin up a bit before I could keep going, also I walked in quite a bit of vegetation (especially Urticae) which isn't that big a problem if you wear shoes and long pants.

Walking on the (right) side of the road might not be comfortable for everybody since once you're out of the town, cars and trucks drive quite fast, however it's not dangerous in the least from my experience if you stay out of the road. If you don't want to walk all the way there, you could probably ask drivers at Auxerre driving North if they can drop you at the toll, but that's not something I tried.

Station bien équipée en services (wifi gratuit, prises électriques.). Ouverte 24/24. Pratique pour l'autostop nocturne. Assez fréquentée.

I was trying to get to Tonnerre (EAST), which is right between Auxerre and Dijon, and far from the big roads. I was initially waiting at the gas station in the "Avenue du Maréchal Juin", but a guy from Auxerre dropped me under this bridge because it would be easier according to him, and it is indeed the perfect spot for hitchhikers (it being practical doesn't mean many will stop...): plenty of space for cars to pull over, great visibility, the bridge offers protection from the sun and they all slow down to take that turn.
Easy to reach on foot too.

If you wish to go SOUTH (or NORTH) from Auxerre, I suggest you continue (either on foot or ask to be dropped) to the highway toll further down the road (5km/2.5mi) to the East. From there catch a lift to the nearest rest area in the direction you want to go, and wait for somebody to take you.

Northward, 2 male hikers with Paris and Bretagne signs. 8:30am
not a lot of space to stop and not a lot of traffic going to the a6, most people go to the other directions of the roundabout.
got picked up for quite a long portion though.

Picked up by two lovely people going to Versailles from a festival near Nancy, with a sign saying "route vers Paris" (Paris was written much larger than the rest)

Towards Auxerre. 2 male hikers, around 8pm.
Great spot, even though there is not a lot of traffic, it seems that people mostly go to Auxerre on this road.

Really good spot to Auxerre. Seen from far, the good amount of trafic, place to stop... You can also ask drivers at the station but I think its mostly locals. We got a ride to appoigny (5kms from Auxerre) for two in a few minuts !
