I stood there for almost an hour with a sign saying Köln and Essen on Monday at 11. many cars passed by but the vibe was not great. Frankfurt is a banker city and the people gave me weird looks. However one van stopped after 20 minutes, they were going to Hannover though. After a while a guy driving to Bochum (city right next to Essen) took me along and we had a great ride :)―Arenwithane

Pretty good to go south out of Frankfurt. There’s a lot of space for cars to stop right before the entrance to the gasstation. Stood there with a sign „Darmstadt“ and eventually someone took me there. Asking around the gasstation didn’t work for me here as most people stayed in Frankfurt―Anonymous

A lot of people going to Frankfurt, also you can cross the highway via a bridge and go north―Anonymous

First day noone going south, only Frankfurt or Frankfurt airport. Next day we had a sign saying A5 SOUTH wich was very helpful and got picked up in 20-30 minutes, and drove close to Landau. Got dropped of at gas station near Edesheim. 20 minute walk there, and a store, so you can buy food etc.―Stokars

Really good for Frankfurt or shorter rides, unfortunatelly for us we needed south and desperatly needed to get on A5, when super sweet young lady stopped and drove us to a bigger gas station right on A5―Stokars

Early rainy Monday morning, people were cranky and not many. Should be better later in the day though. Got a ride to the next bigger station. Spent the night hanging between two trees in the woods here (beautiful and not transited).―Anonymous

My new technique strikes again! (Monday morning solo female). Sign in hand (Freiburg, maybe Basel would have been better sign though), walking around looking lost, for a place to hitch, immediately got offered a ride to Basel. Lots of Swiss cars, some southern German, not many French.―Anonymous

A guy and a girl without a sign on a Friday afternoon. Two cars stopped in 20 min, and the second one went south of Hannover. The spot at the end of the station is quite good for cars to stop.―JumpingRabbit

A guy and a girl without a sign on a Friday at noon. There is a bus stop for cars to stop, not ideal as everybody goes a bit fast, but probably the best spot to get out east of the city as there are a lot of people passing by.―JumpingRabbit

Extremely lucky lady came up to us as we were making our sign. I can see it not being bad. Not too much traffic though―Anonymous

Bus stop. Well-known hitchhiking spot, good for all directions out of Frankfurt. Get here with Straßenbahn line 16 or 17, or U-Bahn line U4. Stop is 'Festhalle/Messe' (50m away on the other side of the roundabout). You often find other hitchhikers here, especially in the morning. Waiting time 30-60 minutes. Said to be a good spot, but from several hours of trying here I still haven't managed to get a lift. A much better spot is the bus stop on Theodor-Heuss-Allee. For more info, see http://www.hitchwiki.org/Frankfurt_am_Main―Anonymous

Gas station on the motorway "Wetterau". There is a tunnel so you can easyly cross the motorway.Excellent stop if you're going north either to Dortmund or Kassel.
Comming from Dortmund I stop here, switch sides and go up north and east to chemnitz very often. Faster than directly trying to get east.
Very very many cars go north from here!!!!

This is a restplace, an extremely good hitching spot. If someone offers you a ride to the nearest gas station, think twice, because this is almost too good a spot to lose!―Anonymous

Direction south on A5 (Mannheim/Karlsruhe/Basel) you can get to the Rasthof by foot. Get U6 to Heerstrasse (final stop) and cross Heerstrasse there. You must walk along the U-Bahn traks to the open field and continue the small road. Pass under the bridge and then up the hill. after a couple of meters you need to climb up on the right (i made that in April09, it was muddy, looked as if they are going to plant bushes there but there is a way to get through for sure). Like that you will get to the carpark. As its before Frankfurt you might aim for a lift to the next Rasthof, since that one is bigger and most people dont go that far. But i found a lift very easily like that. (Weekday morning at 10am) might also work for going north, but A5 leads into A7 and A4 afterwards, all the people i asked headed south!―Anonymous

for going north, starting in frankfurt, as it's hard to get out of the city itself.the spot is a small parking, but you will easily find somebody to take you further north from here. you get there by taking the s-bahn S6 til "Friedrichsdorf" and get off at the terminus. then you walk to the parking and hitch a hike :)
