Okay, so this one is a bit tricky. We took the train to Settebagni and tried to cross the bridge to the other side of the Highway, but there are currently construction works so we couldn’t go that way.Our way:
Go to the Southeast of Settebagni, to a street called „Via S. Quirico D‘Orcia“. From there you go onto the field and walk straight in the direction of the gas station. There is a stripe of trees but you can bypass it from the right. Now you should see a cellphone tower in front of you. If you go along the fence on the left side of the tower there should be a damaged part in the fence where you can jump over really easily. Behind that part of the fence is a small path that leads directly to the gas station. Its a bit steep and covered with blackberries so watch out for thorns. Arrived at the gas station there is a big gate on the left that leads to a tunnel which connects both gas station. You have to jump over it. Even though it is a big gate there a holes to put your feet in so it’s really easy. Follow the path under the tunnel and voila you reached the gas station which leads out of Rome.
There is good amount of traffic at the gas station and after 20min we got a lift to Perugia.

Ok guys, I did it and i'm happy that survived ;)Take a notice that from train station to the gas station road is at least exhausting. On the map it look clear and easy, in reality you have to CLIMB up and up, like a 1 km. The hill is high and you need a good condition to do that, especially during the summer.
Attention!: when street "via capoliveri" finish please dont go straight though a wild garden.
I made that mistake and my legs were all stratched and i was bleeding. Just madness.
There is a road beetween two gas stations, so your host can pick you up there and return.
Good luck everyone!

I did this in December 2015, and it's perfectly doable AS LONG AS you're very determined. Refer to this link to see the path I used: http://1drv.ms/1PxI6eu When Via Capoliveri ends, go straight into the bushes. You should be able to see a very narrow trail, that splits up almost immediately. If you go right, it's a dead end, so go left and just follow the trail. The bushes are dangerously thorny, so make sure your clothing is appropriate. When you reach the highway, turn left and walk down the road (behind the guardrail). The path will get steeper and narrower (you might fall and roll down the hill into the highway if it's slippery), so go back into the trees (circled in blue). The trees are pretty thick, but still, you can work your way until you reach a metal fence that's been obviously climbed over a thousand times before. Go for it and you're on the bridge. Cross the bridge and then it's really easy to reach the gas station. Nothing dangerous to report about that part.It took me 15 mins to find a direct ride to Milan!

I had to go through the bushes, and jump over the fence. I had a tick on my leg after that so be careful! Than I had to wait 30 minutes to catch a transport so it's profitable!―Artur Pietrus

So, the adventure is waiting for you. The simplest road is closed (may, 2014) and it seems that it will be closed for like a year. Use this map first http://goo.gl/maps/4ff03 and then go to the bushes straight and on the left, parallel to the road. There is a path made by other people. You will have to jump over the fence to reach the overpass of Via dell'Inviolatella Salaria. Then short walk through the fields and you will reach the gas station :)There is almost no sense to stay with the cardboard sign in Italy, it's better to ask people. Prepare some useful phrases and the map.
Good luck!

Good place to reach from Rome, but pay attention after ):30 on weekends there are almost no train. In this case take the bus in front of Tiburtina train station―Phidias81

You actually don't need to pay the 0.90€ of the train ticket, if you alredy stamped a bus ticket, it's still good also for the train till Settebagni, if you are within the time limit―Phidias81

hello therewe went trough the bushes and it was ok. but remember, if you need to go out of Rome you need to cross to another side of the A1 road just use the tunnel under it (the tunnel is just behind the petrol station) we were 2 girls and we stopped the car in 20 min and we were lucky enough cause we took just one car directly to perugia. Good luck! and thanks for the map―Yallar

I did extremely long and exhausting investigation in this area before I found more-less easy way to get the spot (without 'dirty water and canal') - through the bridge on the Via dell'Inviolatella Salaria. Here is my way (green one). Don't try red one!

This gas station is not availaible at the moment (07august2013), be careful! The only road that you can use to go from Settebagni to autostrada is on a repair now. It's better to choose another "benzinaio".―Bonifer

Arriving this place you have to pass from one workshop, garden, dirty water canal and lots of scratches, but it's a good place to hitchhike towards Firenze and don't try to go directly to Siena.―Astala27

A really good starting place for your trip out of Rome. I've used this one in July 2014 and had no problem getting there - a few comments above some1 posted some very useful directions as to how to walk there from Settebagni. We didn't wait 15mins and caught a car straight to Firenze.―Tschesky

It's not the best spot, however, there is quite a big traffic, so you have a decent chance to catch a car sooner or later.―Anonymous

A lot of cars passing this spot, but no will to stop. Waited 1,5 hour and were taken to the nearest Autogrill. Petrolstation 500 m further is definitely better.―Anonymous
