To anywhere except Iran.There are many dolmuş and buses driving quite far out of the city on the main road. From there you'll find many trucks driving at least up to Tatvan.
There is a military checkpoint about 40km from there, make sure you travel legally.

Surprisingly little traffic leaving town. Was here from 09:00 until 10:45 when I caught a ride.Probably better to take a dolmus further out of town to hitch at the University (marked 'Campus')

Direction: Tatvan, West.It was very easy for us to get a ride out of Van. The one we got after took us all the way to Midyat.
