(on the Dover -> Calais ferry) we paid £30 and joined the ferry as foot passengers. there were lots of people driving off the ferry. we were 3 people and did not find a lift for all of us, but split into 2 and 1, and both groups found lifts to London. we asked almost everyone on the ferry and found 2-3 offers.

the last rest stop before Calais ! lots of traffic going to the ferry, UK cars, etc. We were 3 people, so not many had space for us. eventually, we took a car just to Calais terminal to buy a foot passenger ticket for £30. if it was earlier in the day, and we waited longer, we might have found people going onto the ferry.

we 3 were trying to get to Calais/Dover. a very nice person from Lille took us to this station from the A1. it was much better than the A1 as all traffic was going the right direction. we met lots of people who were going to England via the ferry. eventually, we were offered a lift onwards to Aire de St Hilaire Cottes, the last fuel stop before the Calais ferry, so we took it.

They'd bought the wrong ticket and had no leftover money so we paid for some of the new car ticket. c'est la vie. While on the ferry we asked for lifts to Paris, but nobody was going (nor did it seem like anyone else but our lift would have picked us up from the street - maybe lucky!), so we went to Lille to stay the night. Successfully asked someone on the street to stay at their place.

we had lunch here after failing to hitch from the nearby roundabout to the north. we did not think there was a good place to hitch as a 3 (could not safely stand by the toll booths, and very few people were stopping at the parking spot), so we did not try to hitch. instead, we walked south to a local services, Aire de Wancourt. it took 2.5 hours and one lift to get there. it was very hot.

You might find a lift, but it seemed impossible to us (3 ppl), so we walked to the toll booth nearby to check it out. (we also did not like that and hiked 2h30 to the next services)
