Wide shoulder, but poor traffic: took us over an hour to get a lift North on a cold and windy day

Don't bother with the bus, as hitching to the CBD is pretty easy.Stand at the exit to McDonalds.

Not such a great spot to get out of Melbourne. I picked this place because it had a decent onramp and was close to the metro. Don't accept ride offers to Werribee (as I did), as most exits don't have a corresponding onramp and you will either be walking a ways or hitching on the motorway.

There is a bus station that makes an excellent hitchhiking spot in direction Adelaide. To get here, take a V/Line train in direction Ballarat and get off at Rockbank.

I actually left a comment for the spot just north of here, but this is the location that I left from. I stood behind the road fences on the grass to avoid any encounters with the police. I stood with a sign that read 'Syd' and I was picked up within 10 minutes by a kayaker on his way to Wangaratta, which is where I was dropped.

I left here on a wet Saturday morning at 09:00 after catching a train out to Cragieburn. If I hitch north again, I'll leave from here, and if I ever leave Melbourne by car, I'll be sure to pass this spot for future hitchhikers!

Not the greatest place for hitchhiking, but doable...
You won't be getting a long-distance ride, a short ride to a better HH-spot is more likely - the traffic is all 'local' here!

It's the freeway onramp, but there's enough space for standing without passing the 'freeway entrance' sign and therefore breaking the law.
The cars are coming around the bend with low speed so drivers have time to spot you despite the bend.
The road is wide enough for cars to pull over without obstructing the traffic. (But the emergency lane starts some 100metres further down the road...)

Weekday + 4pm + sign 'ANYWHERE BUT HERE' (+ being a girl) was the combination that got me a ride to the ringroad in 10 minutes.

PS. There's a much busier(traffic from the CBD) onramp across the street.
Might get a ride quicker, but it might not be so safe... Check the description about it!

Warrigal Rd on-ramp. There is a little space for cars to pull over just at the start of the on ramp.
There is a lot of local traffic here, but if you wait long enough it should be a good spot to go further east.

Stud Rd On Ramp heading east. Heaps of space for cars to pull over.

Ask Drivers stopped at the red light if they are going east on the monash freeway. It may take a while to get a ride leaving melbourne from here, but you should at least be able to get a ride to another on ramp further down the Monash Freeway.

Me and my girlfriend were waiting for about 5 minutes. Perfect spot, I would choose the same one in the future. We moved ~30 kilometers and then on the highway it was super easy.

Fantastic spot. Just along the highway. There is a small barrier with cables and you can stand safely behind it.
