The two of us tried to hitchhike from here towards Istanbul. First, we tried asking people at the gas station, then we hitchhiked directly on the highway – a weak point. Few drivers head towards the Turkish border, and those who do, for the most part, don't want to take on additional passengers. Perhaps if you're trying to get to Istanbul, it's a better idea to try and find a driver who goes directly there in Sofia. We finally managed to catch a Bulgarian driver around 7:00 PM. He said hitchhiking to Istanbul was very difficult, so he took us to the bus stop in Haskovo. From there, with a heavy heart, we bought tickets for the bus to Istanbul (it was called "metro" – the ride takes about five hours due to breaks and a stop at the border). We had to go for it because we were pressed for time, and the driver insisted quite strongly that it was the best idea. To sum up, maybe we were just unlucky or maybe hitchhiking towards Istanbul is actually very difficult - Turkish drivers do not want to pick up travelers - we don't know exactly why.―Anonymous

We tried to hitchhike to Istanbul (2 men). Overall, the location is average/poor – few drivers were going to Istanbul, most were heading towards Burgas, and the Turks heading to Istanbul were reluctant to pick up additional passengers. First, we tried hitchhiking at a gas station, then we tried to hitchhike directly on the highway. This seemed like a better method. Ultimately, we managed to hitchhike to a gas station on the A1, just before the junction for the Istanbul and Burgas roads.―Anonymous

We were taken by a family with two kids. They drove us very fast to Burgas and they said that they could take us to chernomorets and they did very very cool.―Anonymous

Got dropped of at the split of the highway and then walked onto the highway towards Edirne. First a local woman stopped, but she'd only go into the next town and not long after a Turkish truck driver took me to a truck park close to the border.―Anonymous

I waited at the on ramp and was about to try going onto the highway directly when someone stopped and took me to the split in the highway towards Burgas/Edirne. I wanted to go to Edirne, he would have gone to Burgas.―Anonymous

Most traffic is going to Burgas. Got stuck here all sunday afternoon + monday morning.Cars are full, I asked to truck drivers but all declined until one drive me tl little before Svilengrad.
For Turkey better to wait longer to get a direct ride from Sofia/Plovdiv.

There's a chance you get dropped at this junction. It's the highway so you need to be very lucky to get picked up.―Anonymous

A lot of traffic to Burgas, not to Svilengrad. We got stuck there for 11 hours. If u are going to Turkey just walk around and ask turkish drivers.―Anonymous

Small gas station but probably your only option if you're going towards Turkey. At this point (November 2015) hitchhiking to Turkey is next to impossible because of the newly opened road. The traffic density is VERY LOW (highway with 1 car every 5 minutes or so) and there are absolutely no gas stations or any hitchhiking spots along the road, and the average speed is way too high to hh directly from the highway. Effectively this means you'll have to get a direct ride to the border from here.

Great for burgas. Not good for Istanbul, nobody going south at all. Met 2 other hitchhikers and we waited for 4 hours. A Turkish truck driver was sleeping when we got there and after 4 hours he woke up and gave all 3 of us a ride to the border. We tried to hitch during those 4 hours and no luck. Without him we were pretty sure we would have had to sleep at the gas station. It is 24 hour though so not a terrible place to get stuck―MrZachyPants

Very average I would say. I’m trying to get to Istanbul and I can’t exactly recommend this way but also I’m not sure how good the old roads and town hopping is anymore. Hopefully some hitchhikers take the town hopping route and we can judge in 2025/2026. Got dropped off at the gas station before the road split towards istanbul―MrZachyPants
