We used a sign with "Serres" as a Destination. Got picked up by a friendly Family after 15min and dropped of Close to the Highway going to our real Destination Thessaloniki

take the road towards the mountains! its a bit more difficult to hitch along the way, but its def. more adventurous, and the sights are INCREDIBLE!

Lots of traffic also going south direction greece, thessaloniki or athens. U can also sleep near the greek custom, there is a closed tourist office next to the bar with a perfect outside roof

the border is okay. not very busy, but many bulgarians crossing and they are picking up.

exit/entrance of sofia-greece and melnik-petrich roads. if you are going south walk a bit uphill by the road, there\\'ll be a petrol station over the hill.

November 2012. Tried to catch a car to Sofia, after the previous driver took us from Thessaloniki. Lost 1.5 hours and then stopped the bus coming to Sofia :) ticket was not expensive. Less than 10 euros

In Thessaloniki direction.

From my female-friends experience it is pretty good place to catch someone.

Very good place in Sofia direction!
A few times in August and at the beginning of September.
U need to pass the Spartacus monument and remember to set up after the place where paths converge into one road, but remember - very important is to stand before a small hill (at the top of it there is small bus bay, but it was not working well) !!!

I can honestly that this place is one of the best I have ever hitchike.
And during this months "it was tested" by many teams like 2 Turks-guys, 2 gals and 1 guy from Poland, and "Iberian team".

I got some shade behind a parked truck, where I was still visible to the passing drivers. Got a ride to Serres quite easily.

Got a ride to Thessaloniki right away. Easy spot, some traffic and very slow

I mean it’s fine, it’s a border so it’s always good. I was there after dark and it took me a long time to get a ride. A bus stopped and I paid for it to take me to Sofia because I don’t have camping gear and was freezing my ass off. If you get there in the day it should be fine

There was space, but all the truck drivers seemed to hate me. eventually a bus driver slowed a little and rubbed his fingers, implying money. it was getting dark, and 10 euros was enough to get to thesaloniki. With paitiance I'm sure you could do it, but the vibe was not great. bus driver only spoke bulgarian. Knowing the word for how much (kolku) was all that was needed. woman on the bus quickly came forward to be a translator to english.
