To hitchhike to Toronto, get the train at Veldome/Lucien-L'Allier (where the Metro meets the train, you can use any other station on that line) and head to Dorion. Once there get to the 20 highway that passes south of the rail through the town, to the last set of traffic light. Wide shoulders, slow and freaquent traffic, only problen is that big vehicles are forbiden from stopping. Took me 30 minutes with a sign, as from 11:30 am.

Hudson Inn - once you've reached that one, you almost always get a ride to Ottawa. It's a truck stop but there's just a lot of cars stopping there too.

Flying J truck stop. If you're heading toward west, this is a good place to go. I've drop a friend there and he found a ride to Toronto in 5min, dinner included.

Quite a neat spot, though I had to wait a bit over an hour, which is longer than Quebec average for me. Maybe beacuse I started on the morning of Canada Day.

Easy to get to, $3 bus ride from the centre of Montreal. Great place to pull over, long straight stretch to get noticed from far, as though it was meant for hitching. Not so much traffic though.

Second time we get lucky here. It was dark, we thought it wouldn't work. Only 15min and someone drove us straight to Ottawa

Take the train to Île Perrot OR take bus 211 from Lionel-Groulx subway station and walk from the terminus over the bridge to here. The highway becomes a boulevard for a short disance, there is heavy traffic but a lot of space to pull over, so it's very safe. Get a ride past Vaudreuil at least to be completely out of the metropolitain area.

Ottawa to Mtl
Started late and got stuck here at night. Waited 1h at the ultramar gas station asking drivers, most of them were local rides, or going West. Finally got a ride around 11pm to get to Dorval.

Ended up stranded near Rigaud, and spent a night underneath an overpass. Luckily in the morning, a car stopped for us as we were walking along the autoroute (which is illegal, but there was little traffic coming from the off-ramps). In the future, I would try to just get a direct ride to Ottawa from Hudson Inn.
