Toll gate more or less right in the city, so you can easily walk there. Staff and police were indifferent. Getting a lift west/north towards Zhangye turned out to be a bit tricky though.

I walked here from toll gate (4 km)
and got a lift after 1 hour of waiting.
There is a small pocket where car can pull over.

I waited here 2 hours and nobody stopped. When I showed to drivers plate with word "hitchhiking" in chinese, everyone reject me. I stopped car only after I walked 4 km further.
police did not allow to cross toll gate. from the beginning they even did not allow to be here, they said "go stop cars in the city".
4 km further there is a small pocket, so car can pull over

by the barrier-toll. That's highway for 4 directions, we were in two, heading to Xi'an, that's quite far away... If you want to go to Xi'an and nobody drives theren, it might be a good idea to get a lift to Tianshui, which is on the way, as many driver heads there.

I tried walking to the toll gate first to stop cars right in front of it but the police politely told me to go here because cars are not allowed to stop at the toll gate... I waited here for two hours before I gave up, 100 taxis stopped, and only two other cars that weren't on the way to my direction but offered to drive me as private taxis for a huge amount of money. The problem is that there is a big crossing here, and you're standing right next to the lane that turns right, everybody on the way to the highway is already on the left lines. Generally i was quite unlucky both times i tried hitchhiking out of lanzhou from different spots
