There are lots of cars coming by, but I think most of them are going north. We waited quite a while with a sign to Brive/Bordeaux.

Really hard to go north, not much place to stop. :( Easiest is to get to the péage of Gerzat.―Anonymous

TO LYONTram A to "Les Pistes" then continue in the direction out of town, turn right at the big crossing and follow the signs for the Motorway. A71. Stand near the roundabout. Not much space but a car can pull out. I got a lift quickly there to St. Etienne

Directions : Lyon/St-Etienne, Moulins, ParisTake Tram A and stop at "Les Pistes", walk 5 minutes on "Boulevard Edgar Quinet", following "A71" signs. Hitch just after the big roundabout.

Direction : Bordeaux (A89)/Limoges (D941) (be careful, Bordeaux and Limoges are 2 different directions)Here is a good spot, especially on friday, and week-ends.
Stay with a sign.
For Bordeaux, it could be smart to have a sign "Brive/Bordeaux": if the driver goes only to Brive, he can drop you at a big gas station before Brive called "Aire de la Corrèze" and you won't experience much difficulty there.
Don't stay at the traffic lights 100m before as they are almost never on the red, and there is no place to stop.

Direction : Limoges/BordeauxNot the better spot if there is no gas at the petrol station (I was there during strikes). However, this gas station is the last before leaving Clermont, so it can be possible to ask here.

I waited 1 hour at the toll gate with my dog. A guy picked me up straight to Tours. I was between the way and no employee kicked me out.―Daftbot

A better option than the bus 20 is the bus 33 towards "Saint-Beauzire", it drops you off at the turnaround North-East of here, 600m away (stop "Biopole"). If you're in the center of Clermont you can either pick it up at a stop not far from the Cathedral, or an easier landmark would be the museum Roger Quilliot (confirm the direction with the driver when you board the bus, it's "St-Beauzire").Wouldn't be a good idea to stand right in the middle of the road, you can stick to the side, on the sidewalk and this way you'll have no problem with the staff. The visibility is good enough and it's AFTER the toll so people have already stopped and have the time to notice you; you'll be picked up in no time !

It's a peage (toll). Very good towards the north but don't let people drop you before Montlucon. You'll get stuck there with people only going back to the South or truckers going North-East.I had to get back to the peage before going further. (Got the same driver twice in-a-row though; one of the hitchhiker's goals)

Followed this, worked perfectly. Got a first ride to Thiers, and eventually to Avignon.―Pilou3019
