To Bordeaux.A lot of place to stop for cars.
Best spot by far to skip Lyon. Got taken to a highway entrance instantly.
Sign is a good idea. I did not have one.
Good luck

Towards Bordeaux. With sign. Waited just before the maut/tax station.
Waited here at 18:00, got a lucky ride. A local told me it’s a good spot towards Bordeaux, probably even less waiting during midday.
Good luck :)

Great spot for going West. Two other hitchhikers and I was all picked up by the same guy.Sign said "Clermont-Ferrant". I stood at the parking after the toll. Maybe better to stand directly at the toll on the platform between the lanes. Seems scary but it's okay. Cars slow down and see you big smile more clearly. :)

Arrived from Villefranche-sur-Saône, i could continue to Clermont-Ferrand and north then. Just walk across the toll and stay at the parking entrance.―giovanniTonucci

Lots of people going east and west so you can even change your kind if you want.Plus point for the small mostly empty barn in Nérondet that saved me from the rain at night. Technically that is trespassing but if you get up early and have no light at night it should be okay, its just a barn with haybales and an old trailer

Good spot for going West on A89. I got picked up by some guys going to Roanne but I chose to get out at the toll booth (Péage de Saint-Romain-de-Popey - A89) because I was going to Clermont-Ferrant. I chose this because I thought more cars were heading towards CF than other places on the way to Roanne. Worked well. :)―Anonymous

This is a shortcut to go west (ClermontF, Bordeaux), so you don't have to reach Lyon if you're in Villefranche already. Ask to get dropped at péage de Tarare and get into highway. Firstly, i waited at the bus stop next to the roundabout, there's a vending machine. As i was alone and drivers have few seconds to see you, only one stopped within a hour. So i walked 200m towards the trees to get some shadow and a kind couple picked me up after 5'.―giovanniTonucci
