Most people were going to Paris, but I got extremely lucky and very soon found a couple taking me all the way to Düsseldorf, Germany!
I arrived there when it was already dark so it was a plus that you can technically reach Orleans by public transport if you don’t have a tent nor want to spend the night outside. Also there is probably more traffic there in summer or during the day with people going further than Paris

A fairly bad spot for hitch hiking, but maybe the best spot in this tangled mess of highways around Düsseldorf.

There is no place where you can stand and catch most of the traffic from the car garages, or the people going to the car garages, or people dropping off for departures. Car traffic for arrivals, departures, taxis, and valet service are all mixed together. Exhausting, but doable. Lots of local traffic but also lots of traffic for long distances in all directions.

Hold out for a good ride, if you get dropped off on the wrong side-highway there will be no traffic going further in the direction you want.

Take a few minutes to look for a better spot and report back. One of the remote parking garages might be good.

On a Saturday, there was very low traffic. But I was lucky and found a driver who got me to Goch (Service station Kalbecker Forst) very quickly.

Great spot if you're hitchhiking from Cologne to the Netherlands. You can get here from Nievenheim train station and bus WE2. After that it's just a 15 minute walk to the station.
If you look on Google satellite, you will spot a small trail after the bridge over the highway. It is traversable but I wouldn't recommend it as it leads through hunting grounds that are private property. Better to take the long way around. Either way, the service station is accessible on foot through a whole in the fence or on the small road.

Waited for 5 minutes, then found a friendly man and his girlfriend who took me one service station further to Geismühle. There was low traffic on Saturday, but I got lucky and found somebody quickly.

Immediately found a ride to Neuss, Germany even though it was fairly late already and there weren't a whole lot of cars around. Just look out for German license plates. My ride even fed me and offered to buy me a coffee!

This place can range from being a good spot to being a really bad spot, depending on which direction you want to go. Direction South, like France and Cologne is usually no Problem, once I waited only 5 min. to get a ride to Paris. Then again going direction north (I was going to Poland), it took me like an hour to get somebody to take me to a service station on the A2, only 60 km far.
Good luck!

A woman offered me a ride to Essen Hbf. Pay attention when you walk along the road, there's no pavement.

Great spot, got a ride to Dortmund within 10min and before three cars had already stopped....
there's no pavement at the road but you can get there from a gravel square from the back side...

I do not know if I was just lucky. Stood there with a sign A2 Berlin. After 45 minutes a Mercedes S-Class picked me up directly to Berlin.

A lot of fairly local traffic. Many people going to Roermond and no one at all going to Venlo. We were asking people for ages.

Rainy Sunday Afternoon - people going to Roermond (but not beyond) or staying in DE. Picked up by Dutch people driving towards Eindhoven via Venlo.
