Not much traffic, but got a ride easily to the next Raststätte.

Traffic is quite fast but there is enough space to stop.

I had a sign saying "Basel". I wanted to go to the Pratteln service station to stay on the swiss A2 highway. Got picked up by a guy driving to Brugg. He said he was going through Basel, so I took the ride, but actually he went through Lörach. Be aware that there are two entries into Switzerland! Make sure the guy is going the way you want.

I wait less than 1 min, a car stop and drive me to the city center of Frieburg

A lot of car going to North A3, but some are traveling south. It took me 2h to wait for direct ride to Freiburg, but then it was very fast ride and directly to the place I need.
The spot is good, with nice view and not so expensive (relative to other petrol stations). Many foreign car, mostly NL, but some B as well. People are friendly and it is worth to try to speak directly to them. During 2 hours of waiting 4 drivers offer me a ride to north, but I politely declined as there is no better spot further north to hhike south. You just need to be patient here

If you can avoid this spot, do it. Many people stay in the vicinity.
That said, there's lots of space to pull over at the bus stop, and you'll find somebody eventually.

Much better spot than the one further to the East. Unlike the other spot, the parking lots are never blocked due to a zone of "absolutes Halteverbot". That makes it much easier for drivers to stop.
Also, drivers are less likely to be blocked by truck traffic on the right lane, and the can change lanes more easily and safely.
Sign is highly recommended, as traffic can go north and south on the A5.
Look for a ride that takes you at least to the next service station on the highway.

traffic mostly going to switzerland via basel, however i can't think of another option for france. can be a bit of a wait to get someone who goes at least to belfort and can drop you on the porte d'alsace. it's worth the wait. male, early 30s, alone

I was lucky once, but the other times it took far too long until somebody stopped for the A5.

Direction A5 north and south.

It doesn't make sense to go here by tram from Freiburg centre, but if you're somewhere near it works pretty well. (There is a traffic light, so you can ask people who come from the Adelheid-Steinmann-Straße).
Tram stop is \"Rieselfeld\".

For heading East (Neustadt, Donaueschingen)

Get to the south east of the city where the Leo-Wohleb-Straße and Schwarzwaldstraße meet each other (B31). Somewhere there is a strip of grass right in front of a side road. As this is a busy road leading out of the town waiting time is not very long.

Dir: South (Basel) only!!!

Gasstation Schauinsland

OK traffic

You can get here from Freiburg by taking Bus No. 36 towards Hochdorf, exit Bus station Högestraße. Makes sense if you're trying to make a long distance. Otherwise you might just stay at Kronenbrücke, all together it will take the same amount of time.

Coming from the north it works the same, if you want to get to freiburg let them drop you out here, try to find someone who is going directly to freiburg or take bus no. 36.
