I was going south, trucks are all headed east through Cologne and most passenger cars were headed north. One driver took pity and drove me out of his way to get me south. He said he told a friend over the phone there was a hitchhiker and the friend dared him to give the lift, it was his first time.

Safety note: a 5 passenger car with 5 male occupants attempted to get me to give them money for a ride at this spot, even though they clearly didn't have space. They became belligerent when I declined, until they saw other people watching and sped away. I made a point of chatting with as people as possible after this in case they came back.

Drivers were overall not polite, relatively low passenger car traffic and a lot of dirty looks or avoidance - I was clean and groomed, didn't have this problem elsewhere.

Saw a van with Spain number plates and kayaks on top, talked to the driver and he took me to just outside of Cologne.

I made a mistake and trusted my driver that this would be a good place. It was not. I tried standard hitchhiking, but soon realized that there is too heavy traffic for that here. So I started asking at the gas station, and that worked after some time.

This was a good spot for the Aachen direction. You can be clearly seen, and the cars are slow from the crossroad. They can also easily stop at the bus station.

Not the greatest spot. I needed to go in the Aachen direction, but I just needed to get on the main roads, so after a few minutes, I realized I just needed to get out of here, and Librar is fine.

Not that much traffic, but it was a sunday. Still got a lift to Aachen very quick. Good spot, lots of trucks, and a few belgian cars.

May favourite starting spot to get out of the area to the Netherlands/Belgium/France. So far has worked out for me fairly quickly every single time.
This review is super late, but I was there in May in the afternoon and found folks going my direction in half an hour by asking around. It only took half an hour because they wanted to finish their meal (which, totally fair.) I think the finding itself only took about 10 minutes.

Good starting spot to get to Aachen and beyond to Belgium or NL, easy to reach with public transport too. I wasn't even there at a good time (Mid-November on a weekday, very foggy weather) and still found a ride to Aachen pretty quickly by asking around.

Decent Rasthof to continue further to the west (Belgium - Aachen - NL), You can even access it from Cologne by taking a train to Konigsdorf and walk from the station to the Services (Augustinus Str and Marienhofer Weg)

needed over 1.5 hours to get a ride in direction dortmund. most people are heading direct to the north to duisburg or something. must be better weekdays but dont know. to the south or the north this is doable but it is difficult to the northeast...
