Most people were going to Paris, but I got extremely lucky and very soon found a couple taking me all the way to Düsseldorf, Germany!
I arrived there when it was already dark so it was a plus that you can technically reach Orleans by public transport if you don’t have a tent nor want to spend the night outside. Also there is probably more traffic there in summer or during the day with people going further than Paris

Very good spot to get out of Oberhausen onto A3 in the direction of Arnhem. There's a traffic light you can stand next to with a sign. Mine was super improvised and it still worked in like 5 minutes. Not super far but to Hünxe which I knew to be a good spot to continue. Was pretty late, so I might have been lucky with Feierabend traffic

I started hitchhiking pretty early so there were only few cars. After an hour I started asking drivers and got ride to duseldorf with Polish driver (being polish probably helped me a lot with that)

Having wasted a whole day in the Ruhrpot I ended up taking the bus to Ohligers Heide and got a ride to Frankfurt in 10 minutes.

With sign "A3 süd". Only got some offers to Düsseldorf. Moved to the onramp after 69mins, but had the same result there. If you get stuck here your best option is public transport to the next Raststätte.

Hünxe. Sometimes you get a ride to Ohligers Heide in 30 minutes, sometimes you wait 3 hours before accepting a ride into the HH'ers hell that is Ruhrpot. Today was the latter. Don't be like me. It's (at least) Ohligers Heide or nothing.

Very busy gas station. Asked around and then an Indian family took me straight to the Netherlands. They were driving to Almere, but they dropped me off in Wageningen in front of my dorm.

Not too many cars, but lucky to get a ride to the next gas station as that guy was heading to Essen.

A fairly bad spot for hitch hiking, but maybe the best spot in this tangled mess of highways around Düsseldorf.

There is no place where you can stand and catch most of the traffic from the car garages, or the people going to the car garages, or people dropping off for departures. Car traffic for arrivals, departures, taxis, and valet service are all mixed together. Exhausting, but doable. Lots of local traffic but also lots of traffic for long distances in all directions.

Hold out for a good ride, if you get dropped off on the wrong side-highway there will be no traffic going further in the direction you want.

Take a few minutes to look for a better spot and report back. One of the remote parking garages might be good.

On a Saturday, there was very low traffic. But I was lucky and found a driver who got me to Goch (Service station Kalbecker Forst) very quickly.

Great spot if you're hitchhiking from Cologne to the Netherlands. You can get here from Nievenheim train station and bus WE2. After that it's just a 15 minute walk to the station.
If you look on Google satellite, you will spot a small trail after the bridge over the highway. It is traversable but I wouldn't recommend it as it leads through hunting grounds that are private property. Better to take the long way around. Either way, the service station is accessible on foot through a whole in the fence or on the small road.

Waited for 5 minutes, then found a friendly man and his girlfriend who took me one service station further to Geismühle. There was low traffic on Saturday, but I got lucky and found somebody quickly.

Immediately found a ride to Neuss, Germany even though it was fairly late already and there weren't a whole lot of cars around. Just look out for German license plates. My ride even fed me and offered to buy me a coffee!
