there is not a lot of long distance traffic except for people leaving the airport after their flights. most of the drivers are locals or airport staff. i think immediately after a flight comes in is good, but you might have better luck talking to people on your flight or outside the terminal. still its definetly doable, i got a lift nearly to mainz early in the morning not long after the first or second flight arrived. if your flight is late and you dont want to hitch at night there are plenty of good spots for camping nearby as well.―Leslie

Good place for going in the direction of Kaiserslautern through A63. For Francfort through A63 best is to go to the other highway entrance on the other side of the town.―Anonymous
