Lots of room to stop in the emergency lane, but 2 different police cars pulled over and told me off for standing on the highway, but eventually I got taken all the way to Thessaloniki. Just hope no police come past.

Stand on the Path between the Bike lane and the street and leave some room for Cars to stop

To go back from Mount Athos to Thessaloniki, just make some friends during your pilgrimage/trip. A lot of people come from there and will go back by car. Thanks George and Theodoris!

Good spot to go East despite it's difficult country to hitchhike. I had a "ATHOS" sign written in Greek by a local, it helped me to get more attention than just thumb (I am really heading there tho). Thanks ἄγγελος! I got hosted by a nice orthodox family

Got taken by Italian couple after 15mn to Thessaloniki (two men). Had no problem with police. Deo Gratias! Thanks Francesco and Camilla!

The spot is great (great visibility and place to stop), but I ended up waiting for quite some time to find a ride to Thessaloniki. When asking around, I even talked with a man my age who said he was going to Thessaloniki, but "refused to take strangers into [his] car because of all the problems with imigrants". Funnily enough, I was picked up by an Albanian who emigrated to Greece a few minutes later.

This is a very big road, but it's senseless to hitch on it while still in the city center. I've waited for a long time changing location every now and then, but it really didn't work. I had to go much ahead to find a ride.

This spot is right across the train station, there's plenty of slow cars passing by, but no one will stop as people are going to too many different directions. If you need to reach the border, try to hitch out of town.

Thessaloniki - Halkidiki: On ramp headed south. Wait time was about an hour for me and dutch guy. Most people pretended not to see us. Few acknowledged. Got a ride to the westernmost peninsula. Tough spot but it worked.

Quite a few use this ramp. Cars are going fast but can stop. Okay to go South.
