you can get here pretty easily by bus and walking 10min but the walk is a bit sketchy at the side of the road. the italians were not very friendly and there was not as much traffic as expected. we were looking for a ride to como. lots of cars were going to varese. we didn't have any hope left but then someone took us all the way to zurich and even recommended a sleeping spot.―meowcrew

This is a good gas station to get a ride into Switzerland. People here go all the way to Basel and at least through the Gotthard tunnel.―Anonymous

Got a ride to Milano in 5 minutes and a ride to Bellinzona in about an hour. Good place for both directions. Give a smile to the station attendants so they wont bother you.―Simonkfr

It was pretty easy to get a ride here. I was even too lazy to ask ppl and just showed my banner - 30 minutes. You'll be even quicker with asking Swiss or German cars.―Mrm1985

We were heading to Varese so it took us some time. It appears MANY cars go to Como so that should be quite an easy route to take...―Thejourneyramino

PETROL STATION on both sides of A8 (connected by pedestrian tunnel) - BADLY PINNED! it's2km from Gazzada-Schianno train station (5 min from Varese, about 1 hour 10 from Milano Porta Garibaldi station, 5.30€).
From Gazzada station, make your way to via Roma (it's 200m, ask locals) and then walk it heading south = downhill! after few roundabouts, when houses and warehouses are finished, 500m after the BRUNELLO village sign, you'll find the entrance to the petrol station on your right - and you'll be on the side headed to Varese and Switzerland.
Decent amount of cars stop here but Varese people are quite suspitious - took me more than one hour both the times I started from there, both times I was directed south O_O
good luck! :-)

From Airport Milano Malpensa in direction of Novara: I was there on a Sunday morning and there was not a lot of traffic but a car stopped after 5 minutes for me.There is space to stop for the cars and in general this place is okay.

Originally I tried to hitch from the petrol station just down the road from this bus stop. However, early hours in the morning, it was absolutely empty (although the first guy offered to give me a ride, but going down the wrong direction). Tried to take the bus to the on-ramp of the autobahn, but while waiting for the bus I managed to hitch a ride. Got incredibly lucky, went all the way down to near Milan!―AOD

After two hours with no luck I got thrown away by police as hitchhiking on (and next to) the autostrada is illegal in Italy.―Anonymous
