It was not too busy in summer Monday around 14. But not empty either. I was directly asking for a ride to Genova/Alessandria and got one. Going to get off at one other gas station before Alessandria. I would not take shorter ride as there are not too many rest stops.

Many local cars, but i was lucky i got a ride to the gas station at the highway, that's a better spot for going south. :)

Got here from the toll station where I was kicked out of by police lol (luckily no fine). Got a ride to Borgomanero train station.

I was kicked out of here twice, one by highway service, secondly by police themselves. One car stopped before that going to Milano, but I rejected since I was going to Genova. Better find a gas station. I walked towards local road leading from Arona.

Not the greatest spot but getting out of Feriolo is possibly the best spot. Need to walk up from the road at the lake.

PETROL STATION on both sides of A8 (connected by pedestrian tunnel) - BADLY PINNED! it's
2km from Gazzada-Schianno train station (5 min from Varese, about 1 hour 10 from Milano Porta Garibaldi station, 5.30€).
From Gazzada station, make your way to via Roma (it's 200m, ask locals) and then walk it heading south = downhill! after few roundabouts, when houses and warehouses are finished, 500m after the BRUNELLO village sign, you'll find the entrance to the petrol station on your right - and you'll be on the side headed to Varese and Switzerland.
Decent amount of cars stop here but Varese people are quite suspitious - took me more than one hour both the times I started from there, both times I was directed south O_O
good luck! :-)

From Airport Milano Malpensa in direction of Novara: I was there on a Sunday morning and there was not a lot of traffic but a car stopped after 5 minutes for me.
There is space to stop for the cars and in general this place is okay.
