Best hitching spot for going north. Stand on the beginning of the highway (somewhere around the big ass gate). Plenty of space for cars to pull up. You can get there by taking local bus number 19 or a songthaew from Talat Sao―CarlitosPL

Towards Luangprabang. Loads of cars and plenty of space to stop, but locals just don't undestand the concept. Tried for 1-2h and took a bus (2011).―Anonymous

More cars and trucks than on the free route. Got a ride straight to Vientiane―Anonymous

If you're planning to go to Vang Vieng, hitchhiking on the highway might be your best bet. While there may be fewer drivers than on the other route, you could get lucky and catch a direct ride to Vang Vieng. I only waited two minutes before getting picked up. The signs in Lao are really helpful.―UnSimpleVagabond

Waited for less than 10 min, got a HH from european guy. If you head south just stick to gas stations on the highway. Managed to get all the way to Bangkok with a very chill pace in 3 days by sticking to the highway.―Piotrek
