The road is so bad cars basically have to stop anyway, had a 5km sign which was good for getting me out of town.

Not a lot of traffic, good to have a sign for Vang Vieng if that’s your direction because most cars are going to Vientiane

Best hitching spot for going north. Stand on the beginning of the highway (somewhere around the big ass gate). Plenty of space for cars to pull up. You can get there by taking local bus number 19 or a songthaew from Talat Sao

there weren't many cars during the weekday but it is a nice spot on the main road more outside of the city where you can still walk to from the centre

just past town. Low traffic, but wait-time reasonable

More cars and trucks than on the free route. Got a ride straight to Vientiane

You can catch a truck to Vang Vieng but don't do it in rainy season. The roads are often blocked by landslides. It took us 2 days instead if 4 hours. Try to catch on the other road to Kasi, cars choose this road as there are no trucks.

Better to try on the paid route.
