Ok, this was not great spot south, if you are heading south I would discourage you from going here, but it was kinda nice spot towards Belgium. Be aware a lot of migrants are lurking around after dark, we had two of them jump on top of our truck and drove them to Belgium (they were not happy about that and banged on our roof). It was definitely one of my crazier stories, but it was kinda fun. Just to be aware of that. (Normally I would sleep around here, but I would never sleep in this place, it was not safe, therefore I went back north to Belgium)―martih

I stood here, and a guy picked me up after a few minutes, stopped and told me this wasn't a great place, and brought me to a better one. There is a large space to stop and a decent amount of traffic.―martih

A good, safe spot for Brugge or Ghent. Cars can see you clearly, and they can safely stop at the local bus stop. It is still kinda the city centre, so having a sign would be advised, but this road is still one of the main ways for cars to get out of the city; therefore, I think it is pretty good.―martih

There weren't a lot of cars but I got a lift offer every 20 minutes further down the road to the entry of the N49.I was aiming for the E34/Antwerp and none of them headed down the E34. I was told the entry of the N49 doesn't have a lot of good spots to stand in but have no evidence of that.
Might be a victim of my rigidity, or maybe I made the right call not getting stranded at the entry of the N49. We will never know.
Also signal here is bad so download GMaps beforehand.

Lots of space to pull over, but traffic seemed local. I was trying to get onto the E34 to the Netherlands via Antwerp(ambitious, I know) and was offered a ride that took me further down the N9.You might be better off taking the E40 to Ghent/Antwerp if you wanna go to the Netherlands, but I didn't try that other option. Disregarding that though, it's decent.

Most traffic passing through is crossing the channel. The bus stop allows plenty of space for stopping and you are visible from far away.Be aware that the leftmost lane (where cars will be able to access you) is normally a truck lane.
Locals I spoke to use this spot semi-regularly.
When crossing, make sure to check with your driver that he/she can add an additional passenger to their ticket. If they booked directly with the ferry company then it shouldn't be an issue. If through an agency, that will be challenging.
Also, the UK government is currently rolling out Advance Passenger Information (API) where you'd need to submit personal info. When I went, the API was done when passing through passport controls, but some boat companies are talking about turning it into a pre-submitted form. Make sure you check with the ferry company for the latest info.

Good place it you want to go to 'Brugge' or 'Sluis'.Most chance of getting a ride is when the traffic lights are turned red because there isn't much place to pull over.

Great spot if you want to go out of Bruges. Just put up a sign that says '4km' and ask if they go to 'Oostkamp', and if they could drop you off near the highway (E40). Even by night it's great!―Anonymous
