We waited for a while and asked around but most people go to the border (and thats a tough spot to get out)

Great spot towards the border. We just started asking people in the morning and a couple took us to the border.

After the bad luck on the official spot in Amsterdam, here we did not even started hitchhiking and guy came asking where we are going and took us all the way behind Groningen. He was himself and experienced hitchhiker.

I got very lucky on a early Saturday morning in December.

I took bus 5 to Scharmer here and walked across the bridge to get to the gas station,
there was only a very narrow and slippery plank across the ditch though, so it is quite hard to reach.

But I got lucky and got a ride all the way to Bremen from here.

This is the main petrolstation before the border of Germany. Here it is easy to get a far ride into Germany. Main direction is: Oldenburg, Bremen, Hannover.

It is quite difficult to stop but most passing cars go straight to Blijham. For Blijham it is a good spot.

Got really unlucky on this station. 7 years of hitch-hiking and it's the first time that it happens to me. The guy of the gas station came and said that it's illegal to hitch-hike, that i should go on the parking more far. There was almost no one on this day, so i said that it's legal and that i will stay here anyway. The guy spend the 2 hours that i was here saying to people to not take me. Finally he got bored and i got a ride. Crazy!

Not so crowded, but I guess if you stop a car it's going far.

After five minutes i got a ride to the next gas station, which was way less crowded than this one. It's probably best to try to get past the border at once from here.

Not a lot of people heading to Germany; still one of the best spots to hitchhike east from Groningen. Try avoiding the A7-A28(0) route if coming from elsewhere in the Netherlands, the route via Hengelo (A1-A30) is a lot more busy.

Easy spot.
Take bus 78 from Groningen to 'Hoofdweg 15, Scharmer'. From there, cross the highway over the bridge and go right towards the petrol station. At the end of the road is a little bridge which will help you to get over the water.
