If you re going north (Coimbra, Porto etc), a friendly advice, DONT GO THERE! IF SOMEBODY OFFERS TO TAKE YOU TO A SERVICE AREA NEAR ALVERCA SAY NO! WORST PLACE EVER. I m not exaggerating, it really took me 6 hours to get a hike and it could have easily gotten me more if it werent for a nice trucker that showed mercy.
The roundabout 1km ahead is also senseless. Really. Dont even bother.

Good spot! We hitchhike at night and get a ride in 20min along IC-2

We were moved to there from another spot nearby. Talk to people. Lots of local traffic.

Looked like a good spot, but a worker told us to stand on a smaller entrance quite close to this one. Be polite and pretend you don´t speak Portuguese (if you do) and they shouldn't be rude.

Toll booth in Carregado. Lot of local traffic. Got a ride to Santarém service station in less than 30 minutes. IT'S ILLEGAL, but better and safer than the beginning of the highway (300 m in the direction of the town). We talked with a worker and he said he would pretend he didn´t notice us.

Good traffic going north. Easy for asking or thumbing.

Nice spot. Heavy traffic means a lot of people pass you, but we were picked up decently quick and taken to a gas station at Aveiras de Cima, probably wouldn't recommend accepting any shorter rides if going to Coimbra or further north.

Signs in general don’t seem to have worked for me so when I started asking people through Google translate I had much better results. Did this from 9:30am and at 11:20 a man was going to Fatima and said he can take me. March 8th during raining time and still all good. I’m sure you could find people straight to Porto or Coimbra but I wasn’t lucky enough
