Seems like, in the reverse of everyone else, the spot at the entrance of A1 near Encarnação didn’t work for me after an hour. I walked to the gas station and got a ride in 5 minutes

Started very early with no cars, but a lot of cars coming out of Lisbon to the westernmost point of europe during the day and driving back in the evening

Nice spot, lots of traffic and good visibility. I was looking to go back to France, but decided to get a ride with a couple going to Caldas da Rainha in order to reach a gas station.

We (Girl & Boy) started asking around 14:45 and got a ride in 1 1/2h ! There were two other hitchhikers with us and they also got picked up relatively quickly. One with a sign and one asking the cars directly. I recommend doing both or atleast talking to them, that way they see how you are and you can google translate. Great spot 😁🌱

When heading South of Lisbon or towards Spain. Take the train to Foros de Amora and then cross under the highway to get at this gas station. Here you can ask people to take you.

If you want to head north of Lisbon this is the place to start! Ask to head towards Highway A1

If you want to head South of Lisbon you can start here. You will depend on people stopping for you only. As far as that goes it's a great place!

Even if cars pass by and they see you they'll probably not stop.

Drivers going here are probably headed to Lisbon city or to Caparica beaches. At this place cars are going slow. Cars will stop for you only, and having a cardboard with your destination can make it easier.

waited only one hour there and my portuguese is more or less not existing! just ask the people, someone will take you.

to enter, just go through the gate. in my case it was closed and nobody opend, so go 50m back in direction to the trainstation and you'll find a small hole in the fence. tadaaa, there you go!

Don't listen to this crazy comment upper! The spot is good and HAS a road coming back on a highway DIRECTLY, cars don't need to come back to lisboa to go on A1 north. Direct drive to Oporto after 45 min refusing not direct drive proposals earlier. Go there with a metro, go out on Encarnacao metro station and walk aprox. 10-15 min to the gas station, no need to jump the fence, just simple and elegant spot!

Very very BAD spot! First, because cars that stop there are from neighborhoods from left and right of that gas station, and most important - if cars want to go on highway north of Lisbon from that place, they can't go straight north, but have to go on "round" way ABOVE hightway (like 50m from gas station), then BACK towards centre of Lisbon some 1km, then again on "round" way above highway to return on the direction for north! That means, people who are going north are NOT STOPPING at that station, unless they made a mistake. I waited 6 hours, and two Polish guys I met there waited 12H!! I had luck with some French couple who made mistake and stopped there. Also, some Portuguese people told me that I have to be careful at that gas station cuz it's in bad neighborhood, but to be honest, I didn't see anything suspicious.. Good luck!
