As the gas station was impossible to reach by walking, I started to hitchhike here. It's an illegal spot but it works, a lady dropped me to the gas station where it's easy to find a ride for the south

Just take the train from Sao Bento (Porto) till Silvalde Vouga, and reach this point, but don't expect something special.;) N109 is a bit narrow road but has some luck on HHiking to Coimbra or Lisbon.

Take Metro (line D; costs: 1,50 €) in direction to D.Joao II. At the final station (D Joao II) go out and wolk on the street a bit untill you come to the round about. There take the street "R.Soares dos Reis", which you follow untill you alreadz can see the place where a tunel enable you to cross the motorway. Walk to the indicated place (there is a walking path there - which is slightly hidden, so look and).

PLACE good to go to south (LISBON, or AVEIRA).

The other side (untested) might be good to go north.

perfect place, just take a metro and the walk towards gas station, there is an abandoned building site you have to cross which is not fenced, to go to the station. ask people around in gas station, drivers who stop and they will take you. waited 5-10 min. really perfect place

My friend (male) and I (female) waited for 50 minutes with a sign "Lisbon por favor :)" and got picked up by a soft toy factory van with old cartoons painted all over it. He took us all the way to Lisbon and even bought us a snack at a rest stop! Great spot with shade.

I think I got really lucky. I used just my thumb and the 2nd vehicle stopped for me. Took me about 30km from Lisbon and bought me lunch. But ya, he avoided the A1 as much as possible, criss crossing around and taking the side highways. Added an extra hour or so to get to Lisbon.

It's the best place i know to leave Porto towards south! many drivers are not following to the A1 motorway, so you have to ask many people and waiting time can vary a lot.

I absolutely agree to what M.chwedczuk says - there's almost only local traffic ("vou sair na próxima"). We (hetero couple) would have had a ride after 5 min but only to Aveiro, so we declined. Then 4 hours - nothing. When we wanted to give up we found another car going to Aveiro and went to Lisbon from there. Maybe it's a bit different in the weekend but definitely avoid it during the week!

October 2013 update:
This spot is awesome. The D line now has its final stop at "Santo Ovidio". You get down there and walk to the back of the gas station on the way described above (20min). It can be tricky to jump the fence to the gas station, but don't give up! Put a sign and talk to drivers.

This good spot I think, but at this time (winter 2014) part of the highway around the gas station is being renovated so some cars don't stop maybe because the station is less visible. Fence is not so big, you can easily jump through. Direct drive to Lisboa in 1,5 hours waiting, but refusing some not direct cars earlier.

Because of the works at the motorway traffic is weary small. Only locals go there. After 4:30 h of asking all drivers picked a car to next station and their after 5 minutes picked directly to Lisbon. Try to escape Asaph to any other station.

We tried this spot for the first time in March 2014. After 2 h of standing with the sign only we had to give up hitchhiking and take a train to Lisbon, since we were in hurry. A few days ago we tried this spot again, this time not wasting our time and speaking with people directly. The very first driver we approached gave us a ride to the next gas station, around 40 km. The roadworks are still around that point, but it´s easy to walk above the fence and move your backpack to the other side too.
