One male 40+, no sign, one small and one big backpacks, a very cloudy day (about to rain). On my way from Taitung to Taipei.I was dropped less than 1 km from here in the town. I've found this really good spot after a short walk. I really don't understand why I was waiting here 40 minutes (very long like for Taiwan). A bit on a hill, but still good visibility, cars go slowly. Maybe not loads of them but still 2-3 every minute. Not the best weather, but it didn't rain. And extra lane with loads of room to stop. This place was a puzzle for me.
Finally, after 40 minutes two (!) cars stopped at the same time. The first one took me to Hualien. The driver was kind enough to take me to the north of the city, so I didn't have to walk much to find a new spot.

One male 40+, no sign, one small backpack, cloudy day. On my way back from Sanxiantai to Taitung.A very nice spot indeed. After the traffic lights (good visibility), with nice space to pool over. Not very busy traffic, 3-5 cars every light change.
After 5 minutes a nice couple of Taiwanese tourists stopped and took me to Taitung. We stopped in a couple places to check touristy spots. Which I enjoyed very much. In Taitung they even dropped me at the supermarket I was going to shop in.
So, a very successful ride indeed.

One male 40+, no sign, one small backpack, cloudy day. On my way from Taitung to Sanxiantai.It was after the curve, so not the greatest visibility. But the traffic was very quiet. And the cars were going slowly, coz it was after the traffic lights. There was enough space to stop on a scooter lane. There are also trees giving shade.
After 5 minutes I got a ride all the way to Sanxiantai. The driver was kind enough and he even got off the main road, 2 kms each way, to drop me at the car park of that tourist attraction.

[Did this back in 2024]Don’t trust the few dots in Taiwan, this country is super hitchhikeable!
Hitchhiked with a friend, around 8:30-9 am on a workday. In Taiwan you can stand on the side of pretty much any road and you’ll guaranteed be picked up

After someone dropped me in Chenggong i decided to visit the very beautiful Sanxiantai rocks, going there with a ubike. However after i finished i had to walk north around 30 minutes to find the most suitable spot to get picked up by cars going north. When i got there though, the wait was short.As usual i had my laminated paper sign with whiteboard marker, this time writing Wang Bei (going north) so as to get picked by any car.
