Leaving BangkokTake the local old-style bus 68-REG from Bang Lamphu to Samut Sakhon for 28 baht. Pay attention and ask the driver, as there's another bus n. 68 driving within the city. It took 90 minutes on Sunday 1pm, while Maps suggests 180 minutes in weekdays.
Don't get off at the intercity vans stop close to pier and trains, where most passenger go. (You can see the highway from that bus stop) Wait for the local bus terminal. Walk 5 minutes to the last entrance into the highway. Cars leaving the town are queueing and have time to approach you. A kind girl driving around on her free day offered me a ride to Phetchaburi even she was just planning to go 10km far, she gifted me an umbrella

Kinda had some shade from a telegraph pole. I stood just down from the exit of the petrol station with a Chumphon sign. Super friendly staff there gave me water. The cars in the car lanes are booking it but the closer lanes are slow and easy to flag down―Kjmurray1230

Good spot, not too much shade, got picked up and dropped further down but is probably a really good spot to get a lift right down south―Kjmurray1230

Awesome stuff. People stop without you even asking. Be prepared to tell them you don't want a taxi or a bus station otherwise they might take you there. Great spots all along the highway.―Looking for Stu

Getting out of Bangkok is something of a nightmare, but if you can get anywhere along this road, you're in for a treat. Super fast pick-ups from lovely people.―Anonymous

Bus stop - Not the best spot, because most of the cars would drive in the main highway, and cars from Samut Sakhon city center heading south would leave at another exit 6 km away. The first driver dropped me here, and I continued hitchhiking to Samut Songkhram (สมุทรสงคราม). 40 minutes later I got my second ride out of Bangkok, he took me for 20 km, but still in Samut Sakhon province.

PTT gas station - This is one of the best spot in Bangkok to hitchhike south. I was going south, then I wrote a sign to Samut Songkhram (สมุทรสงคราม) first, but the car only took me to Samut Sakhon (สมุทรสาคร), 10 km away. You can get a cardboard from automobile shop at the end of gas station
** PTT station is the best gas station to hitch a ride in Thailand.
