Stood right before the highway entrance and also brought some 3-400 m between me and the entrance.

But no luck for me.Stood right before the highway entrance, talked to drivers at the gas station (very few ppl stopped there) and also brought some 3-400 m between me and the gas station. It seemed to me that most people were headed north or eeast towards istanbul/ankara.
Tried to sign/thumb/ask around.

You should take a metro to Bornova station, Ege University Clinic. A lot of students hitch hicke to Marmaris, good spot for Istanbul and Ankara as well. Take not more then 5 to 10 min to take a lift.―Anonymous

Easy to find a vehicle to north direction (Çanakkale way) especially in summer. Not bad with north-east (manisa exit) also. A bit more complicated to south since there are many options but with the right starting point and right changes at central junctions you will do ;)―Luneris

This is a great spot if you are going north towards Manisa and Istanbul. To get here get off at "Evka-3" station (last station of Izmir metro line) and start hitching at the gas station. There are many university students who commute between Izmir and Manisa this way and it's a usual spot for people to pick you up.―Canaydemir

Seems like every student from Manisa Celal Bayar Üniversitesi hitchhikes from this spot to Izmir. In the meantime, there were about 6-10 people beside the road. Had a nice chat with one of them and got to Izmir with two other guys in a car. Very nice spot.―Anonymous

Good spot to hitch a ride to the highway around the city. Ask the driver beforehand in which direction they are going though because it's illegal to HH on the highway and you don't want to be dropped off.―Canaydemir
