It took me quite a while to find a truck going past London towards Dover, but with a bit of luck, you can do it easily. It's a big rest stop on both sides, so it's not hard to find a car going anywhere.―martih

I walked around and got a truck all the way to Leicester truck stop. This is a large rest stop and definitely a great place for going norh. Free toilets, Wi-Fi and power outlets. A lot of cars and even trucks.―martih

From here you can find a cars going in all directions. That makes it easier and harder at the same time. But it's still a great spot. I just needed to go for a better gas station near Luton on my way north. You can charge your phone inside and there are free toilets inside. As around and you will find someone.―martih

A great spot, but if you are heading towards Cambridge, be aware that you can use both the part going north and south. There is a bridge between them for easy crossing. I needed to go for Bedford, but got a ride just to the ramp and continued from there.―martih

I didn't get a lift here, but the passing Buddhist monks who live at the temple just through the trees told me they like to pick people up here when they can! Maybe even try your luck in the car park?―Anonymous

Very big service station, lots of cars, all heading for London. Also a bridge over the road, so you can switch lanes here (as I did, I arrived from the South with a lift which took me around London and took a lift back into the Northern part of London)―Anonymous

In theory these bus stops near the M1 make fantastic spots, long straight roads with heavy traffic slowing for roundabouts... But I had no luck in over two hours.―Anonymous

Direction Cambridge, got ride in 5 mins. There's a bus stop, so a carr which has stopped doesn't block the road―Anonymous

Great spot as the trafic light let you time to eye contact the drivers. Perfect to go North/Birmingham. Car can stop along the road.―Anonymous

Motorway service station, not possible to walk to/from.Not too trafficed on a Sunday morning in January 2023. Extremely nice staff at the café gave me a coffee for free and said I could just go inside if I needed to warm up.
Unfortunately Netflix launched a documentary about a hitchhiker and axmurderer right before I went on a hitchhiking trip, so a lot of people in England said they were to scared to pick me up.
Two middle-aged women wasn't going my direction but bought me a sandwich.
Eventually some guys from Romania going to Leeds picked me up and dropped me off at the station outside Newark-On-Trent.
Unfortunately neither of us was completely familiar with the left driving and I was headed towards Lincoln, so I ended up in an inconvenient spot and ended up finding a car into Newark-On-Trent from there, but that was mainly my fault.

Bus stop - sign probably necessary. Possibility for the cars to stop without problems. I got a ride out to the first service station heading north fairly quick in January 2023. The motorway ahead goes both way so probably possible to get south as well.―V
