Great spot! [The other spot on another road is actually supposed to be this one... mistakenly marked, I imagine].
The spot is this: a parking just before the roundabout, indeed with shade from a tree. Essentially here you get all the traffic from W. Wales and you should at least get a ride to Bristol (though that last petrol station before Bristol is always a bit hit and miss for me...but what can you do?).
Eventually settled on a ride to Bristol as it was hot, but had a sign for Devon and imagine a bit more patience would have got me that ride too.

The highway security pulled over to ask me to leave after literally 6 minutes. There is indeed a nice lane for people to stop but as it's the entrance of the highway it's forbidden to stand there and they probably have CCTV everywhere so you'd be lucky for them not to show up to ask you to leave ..

First group of guys we asked took us straight to Exeter. We had a sign, but it was of little use haha. We were three and barely squeezed into their car! A smile and positive energy goes a long way when asking folks for a hitch, as always ;)

Gordano service station is hitchhiking black spot in the UK. The crash barrier graffiti is a testament to borded hitchhikers

The spot i use for M5 Northbound, the other spot at the start of the M32 (see map) is only good for M4 eastbound. Not the best spot in the world but there's a little road to pull in on just after the roundabout.

All the trafic goes to M5 (towards Birmingham), there's a service way so they can stop for you. I hitched here in dark at 2009 December and I was picked up in 30 mins to B'ham.

Junction 19 is BAD for going M5 North and M5 South . It is good for getting the 3 miles into Bristol on A 369.
Junction 20 Avonmouth is VERY BAD .

A good spot to hitch from there is just in front of the police station. Had luck just because a driver who didint even pass by us saw us and asked about our destination. Got a ride along the M5 going north.

We camped there too (there are some hills behind the station) and around 4 am a man woke us up in not a very frightening way, telling we weren´t allowed to camp there and had to leave in the morning.

Use it all the time, good for M4<>M5 change over. go to the services and ask people, or sit with a sign.

The senseless place is only for newbies to hitching.

J 16 and 17 are just about ok , and better than central Bristol , though AVOID 18 , Avonmouth at all costs

services, don't remember the name. going north-south (services on both sides of the motorway, the bridge joins them) is no problem, but in the direction of London no chances
