hitched back to the motorway after going to the dales for a bit of hiking, was really easy, got there over a couple rides and only waited a few minutes in between rides

asked around at the truckstop after having no luck thumbing on this road. tourists weren't interested but got luck with a van. i camped the night before in the forest adjacent (discreetly).

risky as it's illegal to stand here. traffic officer pulled over and told me to move on so tried at the services but barely any traffic so came back and luckily picked up before he found me again.

waited 30 mins or more just to get scooped up by a prick traffic officer. poor place to be dropped as you can't even hitch the other way due to a huge no stopping sign on the sliproad going south.

Lots of coachs so hard to pick out drivers. Lots of people going south. But still good if going towards north

Very busy for people going south. Still useful for people going north.

I had bad luck hitching at the services, so I tried the hotel. Not great, but I got a long ride to Glasgow. So a win.

Scotch Corner was my longest ever hitching wait - we're talking about several hours, and then having to camp there overnight, to continue trying to hitch in the morning. I stood at the exit from the services with my thumb out. A massive amount of people stopped to offer rides, but EVERY single one was going South, and I wanted to get to Scotland. Thankfully, the services have free toilets, plug sockets in the corridors, and food. I slept behind the bushes, and it was okay. Since then, I've hitched from there two more times. It seems to be a great spot if you're going south. If you're going North, it's better in the morning, but harder in the afternoon and evening.

Where do you hitch from here? Layby or services?

Got a lift in ~1 hour down to Leeds on a Tuesday morning (0900 - 1000). Had camped at the North end of the car park previous night.

Never had any bad blood going North, but heading South I was stuck there was an ungodly wait.
