Roundabout just by the entrance to M1 junction 11. This is not a great spot by any means - I only used it by necessity. However, I guess if you're starting your journey in Luton this might be a decent spot. Alternatively try Flamstead services just off the motorway at junction 9. A trucker told me he thought that would be a better bet.

Very big service station, lots of cars, all heading for London. Also a bridge over the road, so you can switch lanes here (as I did, I arrived from the South with a lift which took me around London and took a lift back into the Northern part of London)

Nice spot, spent around 5min saturday early morning and got a ride to Oxford (so not exactly the main cars' target probably). Might have been luck, but on the other hand many cars were passing me.

Got stuck here for hours at 5pm in the winter (in the dark) heading south. Seemed to be a lot of local traffic, but too close to london for many long-distance travellers to be stopping. Might be better in the light, but ultimately fairly quiet and unpromising.

Entrance/exit of a large parking.

I can't say how good this place is, since I got picked up from a relative of a driver, who drove me earlier that day! Cars can stop next to the road on the green, but it might not be as intuitive, as for example a bus stop.

Motorway service station, not possible to walk to/from.

Not too trafficed on a Sunday morning in January 2023. Extremely nice staff at the café gave me a coffee for free and said I could just go inside if I needed to warm up.

Unfortunately Netflix launched a documentary about a hitchhiker and axmurderer right before I went on a hitchhiking trip, so a lot of people in England said they were to scared to pick me up.

Two middle-aged women wasn't going my direction but bought me a sandwich.

Eventually some guys from Romania going to Leeds picked me up and dropped me off at the station outside Newark-On-Trent.

Unfortunately neither of us was completely familiar with the left driving and I was headed towards Lincoln, so I ended up in an inconvenient spot and ended up finding a car into Newark-On-Trent from there, but that was mainly my fault.

Bus stop - sign probably necessary. Possibility for the cars to stop without problems. I got a ride out to the first service station heading north fairly quick in January 2023. The motorway ahead goes both way so probably possible to get south as well.

Waited 1h30, trying all types of techniques. Oue driver told us that they are not allowed to stop on this type of motorway entry

We spent a long time in the gas station speaking with people, but everyone was going to London, so when it stopped raining we crossed the road and got a car to Luton.
The M&S crew is lovely and can help you
