What are you doing hitchhiking in this part of the world? Better be towards Norwich, because that's where everyone is going.
The guy in the petrol station said he had worked here for 4 years and had never seen a hitchhiker here before. This spot is QUIET. At one point the only car at the petrol station was the one belonging to the guy working behind the till. Despite the low footfall, the good thing is pretty much everyone stopping here is going to be heading north towards Norwich. So if that's the direction you're headed in, this is a good spot.

This service station is quite spread out, I went with standing by the petrol station next to McDonald's. My sign said "Norwich please". I did get one offer of a ride all the way to Norwich from this spot (After just ~15 mins of waiting), but I refused it. The vibe seemed off and it seemed like they were more interested in getting me to pay for their petrol than give me a lift.

Another 15-20 mins later, a hockey player picked me up and dropped me off at a service station on the motorway nearby.

I always sit on the bench outside McDonald's. It means everyone stopping at this service station gets a chance to look at you and think about offering you a ride. You can also chat with the smokers whilst you're waiting here. My sign said "NORTH please :)" I got an offer to London after 20 minutes, I declined as I was aiming for Norfolk. A couple minutes later I got a ride to Ipswich.

Lay-by is about 300 m after the roundabout - use the 800 Park+Ride bus to get close and walk for 20 mins.

The A 12 is a fast road and traffic has picked up speed so you will be very lucky if someone stops.

Only tackled the A120 once, and it has put me off for life. We got the ferry into Harwich around mid-afternoon. Tried several spots from the harbour onto the A120, eventually just walked with our thumbs out and a sign on our backs. No luck. This was August, but long summer evenings or not, eventually it got dark. We camped out in a hedge. It took us another 4 hours the next day before we got our first lift. My map still has a big 'NO!' written next to Harwich, in case I ever forget.
