This is a massive rest stop. I can highly recommend it. But when walking around the trucks, I had no luck (it took me about 45 minutes). After that, I moved to the exit with just thumbing with a sign, and it was pretty fast all the way to Leeds.―martih

Awesome spot for hitching. Large gas station. And there is an awesome view of the lake if you have a time to chill out I highly recommend to check it out.―martih

Lots of cars stopped but most were going to Birmingham or up the M6. I was hoping to get onto the M1 but gave up and went up the M6―Anonymous

Layby in easy walking distance from central Manchester. Good for hitching south. Traffic fast but a good place for it to stop.―Anonymous

J20a, people will not stop for you despite very substantial on ramp. In fact, you'll get abuse and stuff chucked at you. People from Warrington are lovely.―Anonymous

Depends where you're trying to get toAvoid if you're trying to get North of Manchester! - go back to Sandbach and then up.
Ok for getting lifts into Manchester, sometimes liverpool or toward Leeds.

Asking around at this truck station is your best bet instead of the ramps. Trucks tend to be heading South especially in the evening but there are literally a hundred rigs there later in the day, and although most are laid up you will probably be able to get a night journey. There is a Cafe (expensive) where you can chat to drivers or just walk around with a sign, which works for me. Had one of the best rides ever in the UK from here.―Anonymous

I use this for M6 Southbound, there's a petrol station and a Macdonald. At the exit from the petrol station people from the road and the petrol station can see you. There's a bus stop to pull in at just after as well. Also there's a pedestrian crossing where traffic stops so they can get a good look at you and (hopefully) see that you look nice!―Anonymous

Good spot for getting a ride south. If you've come from Manchester but your ride only goes to somewhere in Cheshire, then ask them to leave you here.―Anonymous
