On-ramp 2 Chepstow, M48 towards Bristol. Nice hard shoulder, but quite fast traffic. If you can't catch a ride you can always walk over the bridge on the footpath to the Severn View services.―Anonymous

Not a bad place if you find yourself in Monmouthshire heading north for the M50 or M5. Expect to wait an hour or so as traffic doesn't exactly flood through these services, but there's plenty of room to stand and you're just as likely to get a trucker as a car driver. In my experience, way better to go from here than Monmouth.―Anonymous

If you're hitching the A40, avoid having to stand in Monmouth if you possibly can. The road layout makes no sense - a dual carriageway with almost nowhere for cars to stop. If you have to go from Monmouth though, this is the only place I've had any luck. The southbound route is a little easier as the small exit for Old Dixton Road is pretty quiet and acts as a pull-in for cars. Northbound looks hard - not done this direction myself as I now avoid Monmouth like the plague.―Anonymous
