Lots of cars stopped but most were going to Birmingham or up the M6. I was hoping to get onto the M1 but gave up and went up the M6

Depends where you're trying to get to

Avoid if you're trying to get North of Manchester! - go back to Sandbach and then up.
Ok for getting lifts into Manchester, sometimes liverpool or toward Leeds.

Knutsford services. Good for getting south, esp. to birmongham.

Walkable distance from knutsford train station

I actually disagree - I got a lift to Perth, Scotland, within seconds (!)

Not always good for Manchester here - we tried once with sign 'MANCHESTER' for 2 hours without success. Walking to J19 and hitching from there got much better results.

3 bad experiences so far in 2013 going south ....no cars . expect to wait 90 minutes and then be offered a lift to Hilton Park Services , Wolverhampton , which is also a 90 minute wait. Avoid Kuntsford and Hilton Pk . The rest of M6 is ok

Waited in the services for 10 minutes before getting a ride south.

Can either a pleasant or bad experience, depending on when you arrive here. If you get here late afternoon, my advice would be to find somewhere to throw your lean to for the night, away from the service station, there are a couple of places you can hide behind. Cook some food and get a hot drink, this place at night even in the summer can get really very cold, wrap up warm at night. It's highly unlikely you will be disturbed overnight while you sleep. Get some breakfast and a hot drink, after pack up, and head into the services, get cleaned up, and get out and ready to hitch. Signs are important here.

How do you get stuck for 27 hours? Anyway, I got a ride in about 5 minutes going around, asking drivers in the dark. The guy asked me to show him my ID, but took me almost home in Manchester.

I waited around 35 minutes for a car to take me west onto the M56. It was quite quiet.

Going to Scotland. Tried here at night, very little traffic, noone stopping.

Got a lift in the morning after a couple of hours on the road before the petrol station, but only because someone got stuck behind a truck and had time to think about it for a while.

Once got stuck here with a friend for 27 hours, most other times it's been 2-5 hours, not good for going north.
Avoid at all costs!

not very good point, but we hadn't more opportunity. stayed there around 1 hour. And then we were just lucky, one woman made a lift for us to service station on M6 - there were much better!

Prefer this spot to the petrol station and bus stop on Princess Rd where the cars are doing 50 or 60 mph and would have an accident if they stopped

You can't walk next to this A6 road!! So if you want to go in the Peak District you have to go with car! It's not the best place, but cars can stop and it;s sure that they are going into the National Park from here....

Had a sign saying M6 North, got a lift to Preston with a lovely bloke. Didn't take long at all but it was at around 5pm so a few people were heading home
