Picked up by two lovely Italian tourists. There are long sections of parking on both sides of the road at this point, so it's easy for drivers to pull in. Due to the exposure and lack of public transport, a lot of people will take pity on you and offer to drive you west (to Glossop) or east (to Sheffield).

Layby in easy walking distance from central Manchester. Good for hitching south. Traffic fast but a good place for it to stop.

I use this for M6 Southbound, there's a petrol station and a Macdonald. At the exit from the petrol station people from the road and the petrol station can see you. There's a bus stop to pull in at just after as well. Also there's a pedestrian crossing where traffic stops so they can get a good look at you and (hopefully) see that you look nice!

Have used this place multiple times and never got a ride in less than 45mins. On one occasion it took over 3 hours. However, I've always got a ride, and there's not many other options in Manchester. If you do decide to try this spot, any ride going vaguely in the direction you need will probably result in you finding a better spot than this one, so it's often worth taking the chance on any ride offer from here. Getting to M6 J19, or M6 Knutsford Services from here is definitely worth it.

waited 3 hours and then walked 2 km south west to the next slip road which was quiet and much better , after a kind driver told me to give up at that point at the fuel station

not very good point, but we hadn't more opportunity. stayed there around 1 hour. And then we were just lucky, one woman made a lift for us to service station on M6 - there were much better!

Prefer this spot to the petrol station and bus stop on Princess Rd where the cars are doing 50 or 60 mph and would have an accident if they stopped

Not a suitable place to turn out, and traffic is a little fast, but I still managed to get someone. They turned back and got me. They were a wonderful old couple who go out for a pleasure drive in this gorgeous countryside every week. They were delighted to take me to my destination in Edale and buy us dinner at the Inn there! This is why I hitch hike!
