(28F) The woman in the station said it was a bit of a rough area to be asking for lifts but I found people to be very friendly even if they couldn’t take me. I eventually got someone to drop me at Washington Services as I was heading south on the A1 and assumed it would be busier and easier there which it was.

Very busy for people going south. Still useful for people going north.

Take the 39 or 40 bus from Newcastle city centre to Dumpling Hall Estate, and get off at the roundabout. Walk down the sliproad to the main road. The sliproad is very long so cars already on the A69 will be able to stop.

This is a gas station where you could stay close to the entrance. There is a big place for cars to park. Sometimes they passes a little too fast but there are many cars passing by. The owner of the gas station told me that 2 people tried to hitchhike there. A girl asked for people and she got a ride but the guy didn't make it.

Slip road onto the A1 - good area for cars to safely pull over, and a lot of people driving long distances south. My longest wait here has been 45 minutes, but they took me all the way to Manchester, so be patient and you'll do fine. You can get the 21 bus here, get off at the Eighton Lodge stop then walk around the roundabout and along the grassy verge to get onto the slip road. I've gotten lifts with and without, but a sign really seems to help here, and have hitched with success from this spot as a pair and by myself with no problems.

A bit quiet for heading north, but if you're south of newcastle and need to get across the city, there aren't many decent places. Hitched here twice, both in the dark, took a while but got a life after an hour or so
