traffic is not crazy, but this is still my pick of choice to get to england from france. i've had varying luck ranging from rides in 2h to, this time, getting there at 18:30 and only getting a lift at 10:00, with only 4h spent sleeping. i strongly recommend asking around, maybe with a sign.
not huge amounts of traffic but very solid proportion of UK cars (seasonally dependent). i've found that many english cars can be downright mean and are often full, but don't get discouraged! there are also some nice ones worth waiting for.
easy enough to give up and go to calais if you're in a rush.
indoor bits close at 22:00 but i believe the one opposite stays open.
someone called the cops and staff lady vouched for me so they apologised and left me alone

Me and a friend waited only 15mins at around 7:30am and got a lift going to London. We stood just before the petrol station. It worked well as people are slowing down because of the lights and can pull in to the petrol station easily if they want to pick you up. Staff also let us use the toilet there.

I've stopped here twice while hitchhiking south from Scotland to London. First time got a ride to Birmingham, and the second time to London. Both pretty quickly. Plus the services are comfortable, with free toilets, charging sockets etc. I would definitely stop here again when looking for a longer-distance ride.

I arrived in the evening at 23:00.
Because foot passengers are not allowed on the ferry during the night, I asked drivers in the parking lot if they can take me with them onto the ferry.
The good things is that you pay per car and not per passengers in the car, so I didnt have to pay for the ferry at all.

Good spot to leave London in direction of Dover

Probably a good spot still to hitch in all direction (North - West) from London but it is more harsh to continue towards the South-East from there.

I agree with the other post. You can get access to this place from the road that drives paralel to the motorway, the fence is broken at the point where my marker is spotted. There are buses stoping on the road, you should be able to catch one from swanley towards here. Becareful, there is a MacDonalds.

It doesn't look like a great place as there's not much room to pull in but I've hitched twice from here and never waited more than a few mins. Good for getting to Brighton as it's just before the motorway (M23). Get the bus to Redhill and get off when you see the flyover.
